Effects Of Think-Aloud Protocol On The Mathematical Problem-Solving Skills Of Seventh- And Eighth- Grade Students With Learning Disabilities, Nasa Lesley Cole Jan 2019

Effects Of Think-Aloud Protocol On The Mathematical Problem-Solving Skills Of Seventh- And Eighth- Grade Students With Learning Disabilities, Nasa Lesley Cole

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a cognitive- and metacognitive-strategy instruction on the mathematical problem-solving performance and metacognitive experience of 22 seventh- and eighth-grade students with learning disabilities. When solving mathematical word problems, students with learning disabilities typically lack self-regulation processes (Larson & Gerber, 2002) tend to respond impulsively, to use trial and error, and fail to evaluate or verify their solutions (Bryant, Bryant, & Hammermill, 2000). This study used the Metacognitive Experience Survey (MES), two sets of three mathematical-word-problem probes of varying complexity levels, and think-aloud protocols to measure intervention effect. The first research …

Exploring Metacognitive Online Reading Strategies Of Non-Native English-Speaking Translation Students, Shayesteh Zarrabi Jan 2015

Exploring Metacognitive Online Reading Strategies Of Non-Native English-Speaking Translation Students, Shayesteh Zarrabi

Doctoral Dissertations

International students, a growing population in US universities, need to possess excellent reading skills in order to succeed. American universities also benefit from admitting students who do not require remedial English classes. Reading online has become an integrated part of college education, which requires students to have additional skills. Awareness and usage of online reading strategies, known as metacognitive online reading strategies, are proven tools to enhance reading skills in online environments.

The purpose of this mixed-method study was to investigate the metacognitive online reading strategies employed by highly proficient non-native English-speaking graduate students of Translation, Interpretation and Language Education …

The Effects Of Self-Regulated Learning Strategy Instruction And Structured-Diary Use On Students' Self-Regulated Learning Conduct And Academic Success In Online Community-College General Education Courses, Bianca Rowden Quince Jan 2013

The Effects Of Self-Regulated Learning Strategy Instruction And Structured-Diary Use On Students' Self-Regulated Learning Conduct And Academic Success In Online Community-College General Education Courses, Bianca Rowden Quince

Doctoral Dissertations

Student success in community-college online courses remains a topic of concern within higher-education research. Online courses offer flexibility and opportunities for students to learn anytime and anywhere. Students who are not prepared for the anytime-anywhere format struggle in online courses. As enrollment in online courses increases, the rate at which students persist through courses with satisfactory academic success is inconsistent. Effective ways to promote student success in online courses is an area that remains under-researched. Self-regulated learning has been shown to promote online student success by supporting student engagement, learning strategy use, and consistent evaluation of academic performance through instructional …
