Minoritized Medical Students' Integration Of Professional Identities: A Phenomenological Study, Travis Erickson

This qualitative study fills a gap in the extant literature by exploring how medical students with minoritized identities make meaning about sense of self-definition and emerging professional identities while enrolled in medical school. More specifically, the focus of this study explored how minoritized medical students perceived their sense of self and dimensions of identity were shaped during their medical education, and what perceptions these medical students had about how they manage their professional identity development. Cumulative student loan debt in the United States has now surpassed $1.5 trillion. Moreover, since the turn of the century, cohort default rates of these loans have steadily risen across all types of institutions. The latest data from the U.S. Department of Education shows 10.8 percent of borrowers who entered repayment in fiscal year 2015 have defaulted within three years. In turn, the first chapter of this paper summarizes student loan policies as well as trends in debt and default. Furthermore, it highlights the consequences of high student debt and default for individual borrowers and the economy. Results show evidence …

Despite political and social tensions, students from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) nations continue to enroll in record numbers, yet there is minimal literature focused on the experiences of this sub-group of international students.

This essay is an examination of the multifaceted reasons humanities education in American colleges is losing standing and funding. Historical, cultural, and philosophical perspectives are used to analyze the grounds that have justified the decreasing levels of support for humanities education. Historically, there is no longer any external justification provided, as there was when Sputnik was launched and the Cold War was endured. Culturally, the high culture model of ascension through the accrual of cultural signifiers is no longer the dominant form of raising one’s status, as it was when the humanities could be justified as cultural initiation. The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education gave Maine an “F” grade for affordability of higher education in both Measuring Up 2000 and Measuring Up 2002. In the 2000 report, Maine’s affordability score (54 on a 100-point scale) was 3rd worst in the nation (ahead of RI and NH). In the 2002 report, Maine’s affordability score (56) was in a three-way tie (with NY and VT) for 7th worst in the country (ahead of NH, RI, MT, OR, DE, OH). Although there are legitimate criticisms of the methodology for constructing these scores, it seems pretty clear that college …

Increasing Postsecondary Enrollments In Maine: Changes Needed In Higher Education Policies, David L. Silvernail

Why does Maine rank so low in higher education participation? What factors may be influencing whether Maine citizens pursue education beyond high school? Much of the debate to answer these questions has focused on students and described the problem as a lack of aspirations. David Silvernail provides another look at this issue. While student aspirations are important, Silvernail suggests that factors related to Maine's higher education system also may contribute to the problem of low enrollment.
