Guy Perron begins his second season as the head women's ice hockey coach at Maine. In his first season he led the Black Bears to a 14-15-3 record. Perron, a 1990 graduate of the University of Maine, served as a volunteer assistant with the Black Bear men's program and was instrumental in leading Maine to a berth in the national championship game. He also served as interim coach of the women's program the prior to his appointment. Perron returned to Maine in 2003 after serving as captain of the Black Bears in 1988-89 and 1989-90. Consistently labelled the strongest conference from top to bottom, the Hockey East Association, encompassing 10 established Division-I hockey programs, celebrates its 22nd season in 2005-06. Hockey East has continued a steady rise to prominence since its founding charter on July 11, 1983, when the possibility of an apparent Ivy League break-off threatened the existence of the ECAC.
