To say the 2001-02 University of Maine ice hockey season was one of ups-and-downs will not do it justice. After losing legendary head coach Shawn Walsh to cancer less than 24 hours before the first scheduled practice, the Black Bears rebounded to come within 53 seconds of winning it's third national championship. However, the National Championship was not to be as Minnesota won the game in overtime.
