Meet The Kiwibots, Umaine Dining's New Food Delivery Robot, Division Of Marketing And Communications, University Of Maine Dining Services

University of Maine students, faculty and staff will see some new faces on campus this fall - but, unlike the first years beginning their college experience, these newcomers will have smiles made of pixels. UMaine Dining is launching 15 food delivery robots, called "Kiwibots," in order to meet the student demand for food delivery services.

The Forest Opportunity Roadmap (FOR/Maine) Coalition was named by the Economic Development Administration (EDA) as a finalist in the $1 billion Build Back Better Regional Challenge. The University of Maine was awarded the $500,000 grant to support the coalition to further develop and scale the forest bio-economy in Maine and will advance to Phase 2 of the challenge competing for up to $100 million in American Rescue Plan funding.

New Maine Initiative To Build Ag Literacy Through Immersive Cte Culinary Arts Programs, Margaret Nagle

A new University of Maine initiative to build agricultural literacy through an immersive culinary experience for career and technical education (CTE) culinary arts instructors is one of 21 projects funded nationwide by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture. NIFA has invested $6.2 million in the Professional Development and Secondary School Teacher grants to increase the number of K-14 teachers and educational professionals trained in the food and agricultural sciences. A speech language pathologist changed Nicholas Martinez's life. Now he's going to do the same for others. When Martinez was a child growing up in Pleasant Point, Maine, a speech language pathologist worked with him to manage his stuttering disorder. The experience inspired him to pursue a master's degree in communication sciences and disorders at the University of Maine.

Imaging Spectroscopy Can Predict Water Stress In Wild Blueberry Fields, Umaine-Led Study Reveals, Marcus Wolf

Imaging spectroscopy can help predict water stress in wild blueberry barrens, according to a University of Maine-led study. The technology involves measuring the light reflected off of objects depicted in images captured by drones, satellites and other remote sensing technology to classify and gather pertinent information about the objects. According to researchers, it can precisely measure light across dozens, if not hundreds, of bands of colors. The reflectance spectra can depict nutrient levels, chlorophyll content and other indicators of health for various crops, according to researchers.

This spring, the University of Maine established the Black Bear Award for Extraordinary Impact, focused on recognizing an individual or group that goes above and beyond in performance excellence. Such positive impact is "deep, significant and lasting," and is reflected campus wide and beyond in the quality of the student and employee experience. The inaugural recipient of the Black Bear Award for Extraordinary Impact is the UMaine Emergency Operations Center, which since February 2020 has provided and coordinated COVID-19 response for the UMaine and UMM communities.

The 2021 University of Maine Presidential Awards recognize outstanding achievement in teaching in the Master of Social Work program, higher education research that supports the well-being of students, and impactful community engagement affecting Mainers of all ages and sectors from agriculture to schools.

Judith Josiah-Martin, a lecturer in the School of Social Work, received the Presidential Outstanding Teaching Award; Elizabeth Allan, professor of higher education, received the Presidential Research and Creative Achievement Award; and James Dill, pest management specialist and University of Maine Cooperative Extension professor, received the Presidential Public Engagement Award.
