The North Atlantic Conference moves into its sixteenth year with an eye toward the future. Having just completed one of its finest years ever, both on and off the playing field, the conference is on the move as the 1994-95 academic year arrives. On April 14, 1994, Commissioner Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. announced that Hofstra University and Towson State University had accepted invitations to join the North Atlantic Conference. Last season, the University of Maine hockey team found out just how difficult it is to defend a national championship.

Following its near-perfect run to a 42-1-2 record and the school's first national championship in 1993, head coach Shawn Walsh and his Black Bears knew if UMaine was to become the first team to repeat as the nation's best since 1972 it would need solid efforts from many unproven players.
