Creative Writing Programs As Supplement To The Common Core Standards To Support Literacy Among Inner-City High School Students, Chelsi L. King

The adoption of the Common Core State Standards by Ohio in 2010 created a path of tightly organized learning targets that educators would take to ensure that students graduated with the literacy skills necessary to succeed in college and the workforce. The focus of these standards rests largely on the use of informational and nonfiction texts to supplement critical thinking and analysis. What may be lacking is an emphasis on the arts and creative writing as valuable assets to strengthening complex literacy and emotional and social development.
