Here You Have To Be Mixing: Collaborative Learning On An Engineering Program In Ireland As Experienced By A Group Of Young Middle Eastern Women, Shannon Chance, Bill Williams

This research project uses grounded theory to analyze interviews conducted with eight women from Oman and Kuwait. Members of the sample group were studying together at an institute of technology in Dublin, Ireland. The paper reports patterns in 15 interviews collected in the years 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 to provide a longitudinal overview of the experience of the learners. During the coding process, three major themes emerged having to do with the experience of learning with others and/or learning in groups. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) has a legislated mandate to create college-to-university transfer pathways, and a strategic plan which sets out expectations to internationalize the university. While UOIT has a well-developed set of pathways from Ontario colleges, UOIT has only recently joined other Ontario universities in creating ‘2+2'–style pathway or articulation agreements with international institutions. The models for these agreements are numerous (2+2, 3+1+1, etc.), with any number of possible permutations. This article presents the results of research conducted between 2006 and 2007 as part of a 4-year study on culinary internships. The article explores what can be described as the culinary life, developing a picture of working in a kitchen. It then compares and contrasts the work of key writers in the area of internship. Phenomenological views are provided and quantitative data analyzed from the 2006 and 2007 cohorts of students studying for a bachelor of arts in culinary arts to establish their attitudes toward international internships.
