The Experiences Of Black Students At A Predominantly White, Faith-Based Institution, Kyle M. Lantz

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Black students are attending Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) in greater numbers each year (Aries, 2008). Simultaneously, they are facing unique obstacles that have the potential to either impede persistence or affect success (Davis, et al., 2004; Greer & Chwalisz, 2007). Understanding the perceptions of the Black student population at a given institution is extremely valuable in implementing necessary change. Focus groups were used to garner the experiences of 23 Black students, staff, and faculty at a faith-based, PWI relating to their perceived sense of belonging and perceptions of the campus racial climate. The Long-Lasting Effects Of International Study Abroad Programs On College Graduates, Mary Katharine Rousopoulos

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Do the short-term effects of international study abroad programs (ISAPs) during the college undergraduate years continue post college? To determine whether ISAP participants perceive these benefits as long lasting, six college graduates from a small, mid-western, faith-based university were interviewed about their experience studying abroad. With the chance to share perceptions of their changed understanding or actions, the interviews focused on the following areas: career choice, personal values and behavior changes, relationships, spiritual growth, and intellectual knowledge. Results indicate that college graduates do perceive a number of lasting changes related to their time studying abroad.

The Impact Of The Undergraduate Social Experience On Young Alumni Annual Giving, Matthew J. Gin

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Alumni giving is essential for institutions of higher education. Colleges and universities expend considerable effort and expenses to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts from alumni. However, alumni giving is also a result of what happens during the pre-alumni stage; while alumni are still students. This study observes the social experience of undergraduate students and attempts to find predictors of future alumni giving of young alumni. Four subscales and 21 items were correlated with alumni participation in the annual fund as well as against the monetary amount of those gifts. Two of the four subscales-Relationships and Environment- were found to be …

Measuring Spiritual Transformation For The Purpose Of Continuous Quality Improvement, Brent D. Maher

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Christian colleges seek to form the spiritual lives of students through academic and co-curricular programming. These institutions need assessment measures that will assess student achievement of their spiritual outcomes and help improve their spiritual environment and programs. This study investigated the viability of the Furnishing the Soul Inventory (FSI) as an instrument for spiritual outcomes assessment by researching the FSI's ability to detect differences in students' spiritual maturity based upon mentoring, crisis, and cross-cultural mission trip experiences. The FSI was administered to 156 students at Taylor University, a small liberal arts college in the Midwest. The results of this study …

College Students' Understanding Of Academic Dishonesty, Heidi Johnston Jan 2009

College Students' Understanding Of Academic Dishonesty, Heidi Johnston

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Do college students understand what academic dishonesty is? To determine how students perceive cheating behaviors, 96 students from a small, mid-western, faith-based university were surveyed about their own cheating behaviors and their peers' cheating behaviors, while they were also presented with ethical dilemmas involving academic dishonesty. Approximately 91% of participants believed that 40% or fewer of their peers cheated. The actual cheating rate was 78%. Results indicate that students can often identify academic dishonesty, but they frequently rationalize cheating behaviors. Other results show that many students have narrow definitions of academic dishonesty or that they only consider obvious forms of …

Development Of The Social Justice Orientation Scale, Benjamin R. Taylor

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Institutions that are interested in citizenship education are usually interested in Service-Learning.
