Male Disengagement: Assessing Educational Variables Impacted By Male Student Involvement, Ben Aalderink

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

Males have been traditionally thought of as being less engaged than their female peers while attending an institution of higher education. However, little research has been done on this topic at religious institutions of higher education, where overall engagement has been thought to be higher than secular institutions (Kuh, 2003b; Porter, 2006; Weaver-Hightower, 2010). This quantitative study looks at one religious institution and measures male student engagement using the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Males’ level of engagement was assessed in terms of 3 separate variables: community service, study abroad, and social activities. It was measured for engagement in …

Spiritual Fit: Spirituality's Impact On Retention At A Faith Based Institution, Crystal Keetch

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

With the growing pressures on higher education institutions, schools are increasingly focusing their attention on issues surrounding retention and persistence. Since many religious institutions are tuition-driven, when students leave the institution, these institutions are losing revenue. Religiously-based institutions are often centered on a mission that impacts students’ spiritual growth along with their academic growth. At these types of institutions, students’ feelings of spiritual fit within the institution impacted their attrition. Based on Tinto’s (1993) theory of student departure, this study looked at fit within the institution. This study utilized a mixed method design to examine the relationship between persistence and …

The Conceptualization Of Faith-Learning Integration In Student Affairs, Andrew R. Lehr

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

This study, part of a larger, multi-institutional investigation, examines how student affairs educators both conceptualize and practice faith-learning integration in their work in faith-based higher education. Finding Meaning And Recovery After The Death Of A Friend During College, Jessica L. Cuthbert

Six years after a tragic accident at a small liberal arts school took the life of four students, this research discloses the stories of six survivor friends who lost a close friend in the accident through phenomenological research. In their own words, six survivor friends report that …
