Reimagining Technology Preparation For Pre-Service Teachers: Exploring How The Use Of A Video Self-Analysis Instructional Component, Based On The Evidential Reasoning And Decision Support Model, Impacts Pre-Service Teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge, James Jang
Dissertations - ALL
Teachers often teach on their own in their individual classrooms and thus have to mostly rely on themselves to reflect on their teaching practices and make improvements. This study explores how the use of a video self-analysis instructional component, based on the evidential reasoning and decision support model (ERDS), impacts pre-service teachers' technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK). Using the explanatory sequential mixed methods design, the researcher first collected quantitative data. The collection of qualitative data then followed. This two-step process helped explain and elaborate on the quantitative results of this study. Participants in this study were 21 pre-service teachers enrolled …
Knowing Leaders: Centering Gender And Identity Among Women Leaders In Higher Education, Meredith Harper Bonham
Knowing Leaders: Centering Gender And Identity Among Women Leaders In Higher Education, Meredith Harper Bonham
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation centered the experiences of women academic leaders – their backgrounds, educational experiences and leadership styles – to illuminate the intersection of identity and leadership. Using narrative inquiry as a methodological framework (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000; Creswell, 2013), the researcher conducted a qualitative study by interviewing seventeen women presidents and chief academic officers in a semi-structured format. In exploring and analyzing the stories of women leaders, the researcher avoided unidimensional characterizations and binary comparisons with male leaders. To incorporate the interlocking components of identity, the researcher considered the impact of race, class, gender, and first-generation status, as well as …

This study created and examined a gamification design that aimed at improving students’ interaction in a graduate level online course. By using a design-based research approach, the study investigated the application of principles from Self-Determination Theory in the gamification design and its influence on students’ interaction in discussion forums in terms of quantity, interaction dynamic, and interaction quality. The gamification design included a positive feedback system, contextualized in a narrative environment that was based on the original course project design. Participants were 49 students enrolled in the online course in three versions of the course, which were the non-gamification version …
Early-Year Undergraduate Research Experiences: How Students Are Mentored, How Valuable They Find This Experience, And What Kinds Of Costs They Associate With It, Gaye D. Ceyhan
Dissertations - ALL
Undergraduate research has been considered as a high impact practice. Engaging in research in early college years are crucial to attracting and retaining students in research-related STEM careers. However, undergraduate research literature mostly focuses on the research experiences of students that are later in their undergraduate years. This dissertation is formed in an article-style format, which is a compilation of two separate research efforts to explore undergraduate students’ research experiences in their freshman and sophomore years. This article-style dissertation is part of a larger investigation into the academic and social experiences of high-achieving low-income undergraduate students. The context of the …

Literacy Curricula, The Common Core, And Defending An Unpopular Profession: The Lived Experiences Of Undergraduate Preservice Literacy Teachers, Susan A. Sturm
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
This study explored the lived experiences of eight pre-service teachers, specifically their understandings of teaching Common Core-aligned English language arts (ELA) and their feelings about becoming teachers of literacy amid the current era of accountability. Phenomenological methods were used to interview participants and analyze data for significant statements made by all eight pre-service teachers involved. Major themes to emerge include that pre-service teachers felt prepared to design ELA lessons but unprepared to develop an ELA curriculum; they felt the Common Core State Standards had changed everything about teaching; and they were anxious about becoming teachers during a time of great …

Being In Tension: Faculty Explorations Of The Meaning Of Social Justice In Teacher Education, Mary Shelley Thomas, Christine D. Clayton, Shin-Ying Huang, Roberto Garcia
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
This study explores faculty perspectives of social justice in teacher education within one New York institution with a social justice focus. Grounded in the institution’s self-study process for accreditation, the researchers were a part of a team that collected data from structured interviews, including a card sort, of 42 full time teacher educators across 16 programs in the institution. Informed by sociocultural theories (Vygotsky, 1978, Wertsch, 1991), a content analysis revealed the language selected by faculty as well as their meaning-making process and describes how individuals contextualized those meanings. Findings demonstrated a range of meanings and lack of a shared …

Implementing Social And Emotional Learning Standards By Intertwining The Habits Of Mind With The Casel Competencies, Kimberly Alexander, Paul Vermette
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
The New York State Education Department (NYSED) adopted a set of three standards for social and emotional learning (SEL) in August 2018. In doing so, they have paved the way for explicit instruction in and assessment of 21st-century skills. The three-goal framework selected by NYSED (2018) is modeled after the five competencies of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL, 2018). The authors are overjoyed by this movement to promote dual objective learning (Vermette & Kline, 2017) targeting affective and cognitive goals, but are hesitant to use the CASEL (2018) framework for such SEL standards. Prior …

Epigenetic Regulation On Plant Stress Memory, Febri Adi Susanto
Epigenetic Regulation On Plant Stress Memory, Febri Adi Susanto
English Language Institute
Plants are sessile organisms; they cannot move like animals when the environment is not favorable. Therefore, plants need a mechanism to cope with environmental changes. For example, when a plant experiences stress, like water deficit, it will employ a certain mechanism that allows the plant to survive the next exposure (see Fig. 1), often referred to as “Epigenetic” regulation. By application, epigenetics deals with the changes of the level of the gene expression without change in the DNA sequence, by DNA methylation, histone modifications, and or small RNA regulation. Plant epigenetic regulation is related to the Lamarckian theory of evolution. …

Musical elements from Northeastern Brazil served as a source for Brazilian nationalist art music. Its principal representatives are Villa-Lobos and Camargo Guarnieri. According to José Maria Neves, “Brazilian nationalism [a musical movement] is essentially neoclassical with respect to formal principles and language: it employs classical forms (suite, sonata, variations, etc.) and traditional melodic and harmonic structures using elements of Brazilian folk music.

Social Aspects Of The Influence Of Syracuse University On Local Community: Social Marketing Analysis, Olga Khokhryakova

People are born with antipathy for those who are different. The reason for that is “the behavioral immune system” that for years helped people to protect themselves from diseases brought with strangers (Schaller, Park, 2011). Today that instinct is expressed in “experience of disgust, for extroversion and social interaction, for xenophobia and other prejudices, and for the origins of the cultural differences” (p.99). Research of Syracuse University students showed that the one of the best ways to increase empathy between people is in working with younger children. That is how “Empathy Matters” appeared – social project of Hendricks Chapel, the …

Changes To Landscape And Its Effects On Environmental Sustainability, Angela Maria Cortes-Gomez
Changes To Landscape And Its Effects On Environmental Sustainability, Angela Maria Cortes-Gomez
English Language Institute
Since about the 1960´s the changes in landscapes have been more intense and have affected biodiversity due to society becoming increasingly urbanized. At the same time natural ecosystems have deteriorated (Metzger et al., 2006, Laurance et al. 2014). Reducing environmental change is one of the most important sustainability pillars of our world because all societies and businesses depend on the natural system for well-being. The complexity of this problem, arises as a result of diverse cultural, political and social factors. In this poster, I focus on how agriculture has transformed landscapes and decrease global sustainability.
