New Kids On The Block: Understanding And Engaging Elementary Readers And Writers In New Times, Chinwe Ikpeze

This collaborative study examined literacy instruction in a fifth grade classroom with particular reference to two case study students and the role of pedagogy in bridging the divide in their literacy practices. Grounded in the multiliteracies framework and perspectives consistent with third space theory, data were collected using a multi-site approach. Data were analyzed using the thematic analysis and constant comparison approaches. Findings suggest that the two children disengaged from most of school tasks because of the traditional approach to instruction, lack of recognition of their learning styles and interests, as well as the absence of digital literacies. When Susan arrived at the 10-year high school reunion of her son Jacob, he was sitting with a group of people he had been in contact with through Facebook. On their way home Jacob told his mother that he had a good time. A few months later Jacob attended a baseball game with his mother where he was approached by a former coworker he was friends with on Facebook. His coworker sat next to Jacob, and the two of them chatted throughout the game.

The article discusses the relationship that school administrators and teachers have with parents of students with disabilities, in response to the portrayal of these relationships in the films "The Miracle Worker" starring Anne Bancroft, "Mask" starring Cher, and "Forrest Gump" starring Sally Field. The authors look at individualized education plans (IEPs), MetLife's 2005 Survey of the American Teacher that indicates teachers' attitudes toward working with parents, a teacher training program for teacher-parent cooperation developed by St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, and the nonprofit disability advocacy organization called The Advocacy Center.

Objective: This program aims to provide substances of abuse education to local high school students.

Methods: An outreach program, modeled after the National Institute on Drug Abuse instructional materials, was developed by student pharmacists and faculty for delivery to the Rochester City School District. Strict regulations prevented admittance into any classrooms until the program was presented to all health teachers at a district-wide meeting. Approval was given to begin working in the classrooms in April 2011. The program was first adopted in two health education classes at Edison Tech (May 2011). Purpose of study: The need to train teachers with significantly enhanced clinical skills as well as mentored school-embedded experiences cannot be overemphasized. Recently, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education ( NCATE) Blue Ribbon Panel on Clinical Preparation, Partnerships and Improved Student Learning (2010) reiterated the need to give aspiring teachers the opportunity to integrate theory with practice; develop good management and pedagogical skills; make professional decisions about practice; and understand and integrate the standards of their professional community (Goodman, 2002; Larson, 2005; Mantle-Bromley, 2002; NCATE, 2010: Su, 2002). Objective: The purpose of study is to pilot a program in which all P1 students input their exam grades for each course in the fall semester into E*Value. Alongside their grades they record reflections on their performance. This information, visible only to the individual students and their advisors, is used to promote meaningful dialog during advising sessions.

Objective: To pilot a newly developed course level curriculum map that documents course learning outcomes, corresponding teaching activities, assessments, student achievement on assessments, and evidence-based changes made subsequently at the course level.

Method: The newly developed course level curriculum map was piloted in twelve courses involving nine faculty members. Faculty either retroactively recorded data or utilized the map during the semester. At the conclusion of the pilot period, a focus group was conducted during which seven of the faculty members shared experiences and recommendations.
