The Role Of Service-Learning Experiences In Promoting Flourishing Among College-Student Youth Mentors, Alyssa Maples, Anne Williams-Wengerd, Jacqueline Braughton, Kimberly Henry, Shelley Haddock, Lindsey Weiler

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Service-learning experiences may uniquely promote flourishing (i.e. having meaning in life, social connections, and a positive outlook) for college students. To examine whether specific relational experiences within service-learning were associated with flourishing, we used data from a program where university students (N= 274; 21.2% first-generation) served as mentors to youth (ages 10–18) with prior exposure to adversity. We examined three experiences: opportunities to belong, supportive relationships, and the quality of the mentoring relationship. After controlling for baseline flourishing and age, results showed positive relationships between mentoring relationship quality and supportive relationships and post-intervention flourishing. Opportunities to belong was not associated …

The Emergence Of Racialized Labor And Racial Battle Fatigue In The African American Student Network (Afam), Tabitha Grier-Reed, Anne Williams-Wengerd, Alyssa Maples, Demitri Mcgee

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Although little may be new with respect to the lived experience of racialized labor for People of Color navigating whiteness and white spaces, this study is the first to identify racialized labor in everyday life. Adapting consensual qualitative research methods to a phenomenological frame, we examined 277 notes summarizing weekly discussions in the African American Student Network (AFAM) over a 13-year time period. Co-facilitated by Black faculty and graduate students, AFAM was a space for Black undergraduates to make meaning of their experiences and find community on campus. We defined racialized labor as the ongoing process of navigating hostile environments …

Utilizing Program Champions And A Learning Management System For Accreditation: Innovative Strategies To Enhance Faculty Engagement, Katrice Ziefle, Kara Koschmann, Renee Colsch, Jill Campbell, Catherine Graeve

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Background:Nursing program accreditation ensures quality nursing education and care to communities at large. The accreditation process is often stressful with limited faculty engagement. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to use innovative strategies to enhance faculty engagement in the accreditation process. These innovative approaches facilitate faculty development through the accreditation process by integrating work as part of the faculty role. Using active learning strategies enhances faculty engagement, provides faculty development, and encourages faculty to practice at their full-scope of the academic nurse educator role.Method:Utilizing Kotter's 8-step process to accelerate change, a leadership team of faculty and administration formed …

Sustainability In Business: Developing An Undergraduate Business Course, Julie Nelsen, Mary Henderson, Sarah Rand May 2020

Sustainability In Business: Developing An Undergraduate Business Course, Julie Nelsen, Mary Henderson, Sarah Rand

Business Administration Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rationale and process of creating a new course focused on business sustainability in the University’s Department of Business Administration. Currently, the University offers just one business sustainability course, delivered once every two years as a January study-abroad course in Chile. While an outstanding experience, a limited number of students can take advantage of the opportunity. After identifying this gap in our business programs, we created a stand-alone course that focuses on business sustainability. This paper addresses the following questions: What is the business case for adding the course? What should the …

Language Perception And Usage In Haiti: The Impact On Education And Literacy, Olivia Dunn May 2020

Language Perception And Usage In Haiti: The Impact On Education And Literacy, Olivia Dunn

Antonian Scholars Honors Program

Although the majority of Haitians are monolingual in Haitian Creole, French has remained the dominant language on the island. Historically, French also has been the privileged language in education, which does not match up with most Haitians’ linguistic reality. In this paper, I analyze education reform in Haiti by first developing a framework for understanding linguistic human rights and the relationship between language and power. This section draws upon the theories of Skutnabb-Kangas, Phillipson, and Bourdieu. I then look at how the development of creole languages impacts how they are perceived. Lastly, I examine three previous education reform projects in …

High-Fidelity Simulation And Clinical Judgment Of Nursing Students In A Maternal-Newborn Course, Carol Reid, Jody L. Ralph, Maher El-Masri, Katrice Ziefle Feb 2020

High-Fidelity Simulation And Clinical Judgment Of Nursing Students In A Maternal-Newborn Course, Carol Reid, Jody L. Ralph, Maher El-Masri, Katrice Ziefle

Nursing Faculty Scholarship

Clinical judgment, one’s ability to think like a nurse, is an essential skill for safe nursing practice. With the rise of simulation to replace clinical experiences, there is limited evidence regarding the effectiveness of simulation on the development of clinical judgment. This study explored differences in clinical judgment in maternal–newborn courses between undergraduate nursing students participating exclusively in simulation and those participating in hospital-based clinical experiences. Following completion of the clinical rotation, students participated in an evaluative maternal–newborn high-fidelity simulation experience that was recorded and evaluated using the Lasater’s Clinical Judgment Rubric (2007). Lasater’s Clinical Judgment Rubric scores between the …

Hermaphrodites In Undergraduate Biology Education: Broadening Horizons In First- And Second-Year Courses, Cynthia Norton Jan 2020

Hermaphrodites In Undergraduate Biology Education: Broadening Horizons In First- And Second-Year Courses, Cynthia Norton

Biology Faculty Scholarship

With so much public discussion of gender issues in the US, it is important to introduce students to the breadth of reproductive expressions in the biological world early in their university education. I do this in two ways: first by centering a first-year research project on the reproduction of hermaphroditic snails, and second by focusing a second-year writing seminar on “Varieties of Animal Reproduction.” The laboratory component of our Foundations of Biology I course is a semester-long investigation where students are guided through the process of scientific research. With support from instructors, each team frames a question, writes a proposal, …

This ensemble was created as a deep dive into 18th-century women’s apparel construction and shaping. Using extent pattern reproductions from the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection as a base, this was a project built up from the inner chemise undergarment, stays, bum roll, boned petticoat, linen shirt, wool waistcoat, wool petticoat and ending with the riding jacket. Using a combination of two pattern companies, Reconstructing History (2006), and J. P. Ryan (2016), and period correct materials, where possible, the ensemble was created to inform my students about how apparel would be created and fit in the mid-18th century. Students value …
