The Patient As Mentor: Transformative Experience In An Occupational Therapy Course, Meagan Troop, Anne O'Riordan
The Patient As Mentor: Transformative Experience In An Occupational Therapy Course, Meagan Troop, Anne O'Riordan
Publications and Scholarship
“The Lived Experience of Disability” course matches first year occupational therapy students with mentors, individuals with health challenges, for a series of community visits. This learning relationship facilitates students’ understanding of disability and client-centred practice. Mentors share expertise of their lived experience; students consider personal attitudes, assumptions and knowledge of disability and their future client-therapist relationships. Findings of a qualitative research study using a case study approach reveal that students engaged in interactive course components that comprised reflective practice, mentor visits, and critical involvement in a community of practice. These experiential and collaborative interactions provided pedagogical conditions for building relational …

Alton's Sidewalks, Jenna Flemming
Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies - Exceptional Student Work, 2017
This reflection and PowerPoint presentation were part of an assignment in the course Policy and Justice in an Aging Society (Year 2, Semester 1) in the Social Service Worker Gerontology program. The purpose of this assignment was to engage in advocacy work on issues and promote change and solutions by raising awareness.
Jenna describes her process for advocating for change "I decided to advocate for change to the lack of accessibility of sidewalks. I chose to focus on this because it is an issue I see everywhere, it effects a lot of people including seniors, people with disabilities or parents …

Certificate programs such as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) have burgeoned in our globalized world. They are usually offered and/or accredited by reputable educational institutions, such as University of Cambridge, University College London, Michigan University, as well as sanctioned by government bodies (e.g., TESL Ontario and TESL Canada in Canada, National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) in Australia, New Zealand Qualification Authorities (NZQA) in New Zealand, & Accreditation UK in the United Kingdom). These accredited programs vary enormously in their design, ranging from …
International Students’ Perceptions Of Factors Affecting Academic Success In Post-Secondary Studies, Anna Bartosik
International Students’ Perceptions Of Factors Affecting Academic Success In Post-Secondary Studies, Anna Bartosik
Publications and Scholarship
This multiple case study examines international students’ perceptions of factors affecting academic success in post-secondary institutions in southern Ontario. The study used snowball sampling and a semi-structured interview format. Various factors in the literature, which are used as a framework for this thesis, demonstrate an influence on international students’ academic preparedness and success. They include: proficiency tests, length of time in host country, prior learning experience, acculturation, tolerance of ambiguity, and motivation. Other factors influencing students’ academic success are EAP programs, faculty and students’ own perceptions of academic preparedness and needs, international student centres, communication with domestic students, and immigration …
Pedagogy For A Plugged-In Age, Independent Study 2017, Andrew Hladkyj
Pedagogy For A Plugged-In Age, Independent Study 2017, Andrew Hladkyj
Publications and Scholarship
This is an independent study for Hladkyj's graduate studies in Strategic Foresight and Innovation (MDes) at OCAD University. The study’s goal is to establish a “lay of the land” informing how technology and pedagogy might be designed in the Web Design Graduate Certificate program Hladkyj spearheaded at Sheridan College.
The research consists of a literature review validated by primary sources, composed of four 30-minute, semi-structured expert interviews with college-level design educators, administrators, and students (both current and former).
A modified, “human-centred” STEEP V (Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, Political, Values) framework provides context to the findings. The output is actionable and threefold: …

Co-Op Research Matters, Matthew Rempel
Publications and Scholarship
Matthew Rempel (Associate Dean, Career Education and Co-curricular Learning, Sheridan College) discusses Clarke's article Rethinking graduate employability: The role of capital, individual attributes and context (2017). Matthew touches on how the term “employability” is very complex and how Clarkes model may require further research.

An Exploratory Study Of School To Work Transition Experiences Of Applied Science And Technology Students In Southern Ontario, Robert Kilby
Publications and Scholarship
This paper details a qualitative study undertaken on a small sampling of community college graduates. The graduates’ pathways from school to work have been studied in relation to existing scholarly transition models. The author was able to discover only a small number of studies dealing with the college to work transition experience of applied science and technology students, no scholarly papers were found with respect to this student population in Ontario, Canada. This study was an inquiry into the college to work transition experiences of a purposive sample of graduates from regional community colleges in Southern Ontario. Sixteen semi-structured qualitative …
An Engagement Strategy For Teaching Computing Concepts, El Sayed Mahmoud
An Engagement Strategy For Teaching Computing Concepts, El Sayed Mahmoud
Publications and Scholarship
The research work in this paper investigates a new teaching strategy that uses active learning through play to increase students’ uptake of learning computing concepts. The strategy promotes student engagement through playing a customized Jenga game. The game consists of a set of blocks, one side of each block is covered with a piece of dry-erase tape to allow erasing and writing on the blocks. This allows instructors to reuse this editable Jenga for developing their own game-based learning activities. The editable Jenga can be used without writing if needed. Three sample activities with writing have been developed and conducted …
Vocational Training In Higher Education: A Learning Centred Approach To Integrating ‘Educultures’, Jeff Ruigrok
Vocational Training In Higher Education: A Learning Centred Approach To Integrating ‘Educultures’, Jeff Ruigrok

The goal of this effort is to make plain any overlap between Post-Secondary Mechanical Technician Standards and Plumbing Apprenticeship Curriculum Standards. We'll investigate whether the overlap is significant enough to create a modern and updated classroom learning template. Mechanical Technician programs are generally 56 weeks in length. A Plumbing Apprenticeship is significantly longer. The essential question is: What portion of Technician Education equates to the first 100 to 200 weeks of Apprenticeship Training. If enough meaningful and actionable overlaps do exist there may be opportunities to strengthen real-world-connections to in-school lectures and labs.
The two key Standards that will be …

Graduate Student Perspectives Of Interdisciplinary And Disciplinary Programming For Teaching Development, Katherine E. Bishop-Williams, Kaitlin Roke, Erin Aspenlieder, Meagan Troop
Graduate Student Perspectives Of Interdisciplinary And Disciplinary Programming For Teaching Development, Katherine E. Bishop-Williams, Kaitlin Roke, Erin Aspenlieder, Meagan Troop
Publications and Scholarship
Interdisciplinary (i.e., university-wide programming) and disciplinary (i.e., programming open to participants from one college or department) teaching development programs for graduate students have been used for many years in higher education. Currently, research on the benefits of these teaching models remains scant in terms of a contextualized understanding, and empirical studies are needed. The purpose of this study was to determine graduate students’ perspectives related to interdisciplinary and disciplinary teaching and learning experiences. Two online surveys were used: a quantitative survey and a qualitative follow-up survey. Three participatory focus groups were also conducted to allow for further in-depth exploration in …
