The purpose of this article is to demonstrate a teaching method that I have used for the last several years and have found to be effective particularly during the challenging final weeks of the semester. I reward students with trading cards for answering questions currently during an unannounced quiz to provide positive reinforcement in an engaging way. Students ultimately form teams and receive a relevant and classic football, baseball, basketball, hockey, or other trading card that they can keep as a souvenir to the class and the course. In this lesson, a ready-to-teach cooperative reading activity, students learn about the effects of plastics in our environment, specifically that certain petrochemicals act as artificial estrogens and impact hormonal activities. Much of the content in this lesson was synthesized from recent medical research about the impact of xenoestrogens and spun off from a curriculum project sponsored by the U.S. Army Research Office.

In this article, the authors explain what they mean by collaborative learning and suggest ways of promoting effective collaboration in senior mathematics. Issues discussed include group composition, the design of suitable tasks for collaborative work, setting norms for student behaviour and the teacher's role in promoting effective discussion. Students' views on collaborative learning are also presented. Perceived advantages include improved understanding, enjoyment and communication skills. Some perceived disadvantages and ways of minimising them are also discussed.
