Education has long been a necessary, yet standardized procedure with little difference from program to program or school to school. In this paper I argue that more of a creative approach using existing educational models such as preschool education would serve us well in the development of student skills at all levels, including college. I also contend that an alchemical metaphor would be useful in the application and acknowledgement of the value of such an approach.

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a 30-minute physical activity (PA) session on Year Two students’ subsequent classroom behaviour. Forty-eight students from three Year Two classes at a NSW private school participated in the study. The number of disciplinary comments directed by the class teacher to individual students (Individual Disciplinary Corrections, IDC) and the class as a whole (General Disciplinary Corrections, GDC) were recorded during a 30-minute lesson with and without previous PA. Subsequent to PA, there were 40% fewer IDCs (p=0.008) and 59% fewer GDCs (p=0.003), amounting to a 49% overall reduction in disciplinary …

This project focuses on the design, development, implementation and evaluation of book trailer videos to help increase aesthetic reading among males in fourth and fifth grade. This paper describes a research study that is a stepping stone to further research on the affordances of digital technologies in the learning of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The study is framed around the modern understanding of technologies as cognitive tools for learning based on the theory of social and cultural mediation of children’s development and learning (Vygotsky, 1978), together with Activity Theory (Engestrom, 2001). The continued development of software such as iMovie and GarageBand has given young people the tools to become content creators. The proliferation of Internet sites such as YouTube and MySpace have provided publishing vehicles where they can now contribute their content and communicate with their peers around the world. Social commentators and educational researchers are suggesting there is a growing divide between how these digital natives spend their leisure time creating and sharing media and the void of such activities in educational settings. I share about my experience converting a traditional computer lab in the library to an active learning space. During summer 2012, the Seattle Pacific University Library staff proposed, planned, and implemented the conversion of a traditional lab space with 22 desktop computers into an active learning classroom. We equipped the room with mobile furniture, a wireless interactive, short-throw projector with digital pens, a new MacBook Pro checkout system, and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Partnering with librarians, Facilities, and Instructional Technology Services, the project came together just before the new academic school year.

This article moves beyond the main issues highlighted in the literature and identifies some of the problems the authors encountered when conducting two common methodological procedures, classroom observations and stimulated recall interviews (SRIs), as part of our dissertation research investigations. The paper first surveys what the literature describes as the main areas of concern with these two procedures. It then pulls away from these resources to explore actual difficulties we experienced that we believe are inadequately addressed in the literature.
