A 2005 sabbatical explored the different Curriculum Materials Centers and Collections in academic institutions in the State of Michigan. In 2014, the current conditions of these special libraries for pre-service teacher candidates was performed. Research revealed numerous changes, including closures, reductions, and reevaluations. This poster attempts to place the research in a visual format.

The 2013 sabbatical was to move as much as possible of my library instructions to an online format. I used Camtasia, Prezi, PowerPoint, and Screencasting to make the tutorials. The videos were made using Adobe Premiere CS6, Apple Final Cut Pro and Apple iMovie.

The need for curriculum materials collections/centers is evident with the study of the development of education practices in the United States. "Keeping-school" was viewed with such disdain that anyone without training was believed to be able to teach - "Any farmer can teach" (Bowen, 1887, p. 14). As education became more important to the growth of the nation and its citizens, teacher preparation changed from mimicking how one was taught to being viewed as a science and requiring its own laboratories similar to science and medical laboratories.

Years ago, in the late 90’s when we had an official reference desk and students ambled their way into the library to ask for research assistance I thought it would be a good proactive idea to take the reference desk to students on their home turf in their residence hall, dining area and socializing entities. I thought, “ What better way to burst the illusion bubble that academic librarians were unhelpful, grouchy and untouchable.”

Curriculum Resource Centers (CRCs), also referred to as curriculum materials centers, are special libraries or facilities providing resources and/or services for those college or university students wishing to become elementary or secondary teachers. The resources found in CRCs assist the pre-service teachers in understanding the full scope of what is necessary to become an exemplary teacher.
