The Sacred And The Secular In Clay's Quilt, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Jan 2012

The Sacred And The Secular In Clay's Quilt, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

n a telling scene toward the opening of Clay's Quilt (NY: Ballantine, 2001), Silas House has the novel's protagonist, Clay Sizemore, heading up Town Mountain toward the Hilltop Club, the local honkytonk. As he approaches the club, Clay notices that "across the bowl that held the town, another mountain rose up" (52). The most noticeable feature on this opposite mountain is a "marble statue of Jesus with his arms stretched out in front ... so lit up that it could be seen for miles" (52). Importantly, this scene acts as House's foreshadowing of the struggle Clay will endure as he …

The National Review Of School Music Education : What Is The Present State Of Music Education In Schools?, Sharon Lierse

Dr. Sharon Lierse

In November, 2005 a landmark government report entitled the National Review of School Music Education was released. The report found that there was a great variability in the quality of music education in schools. It was acknowledged that although there are some excellent music programs in schools, there is 'cycles of neglect and inequity' and greater support is required for teachers and the subject itself. The report acknowledged the influence of recent curriculum developments in Australia including integrating the arts into one subject. The paper discusses issues arising from the report and how it has impacted music in Australian schools …

Lion In Winter – Tomás Moro Na Nossa Estação. Diálogos Com O Direito Constitucional, O Cristianismo E A Utopia Social, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha May 2006

Lion In Winter – Tomás Moro Na Nossa Estação. Diálogos Com O Direito Constitucional, O Cristianismo E A Utopia Social, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

History Of Iowa State, Tanya Zanish-Belcher, Michele Christian, Becky Jordan

Michele Christian

Iowa State University is a very special place, full of history. But what truly makes it unique is a rare combination of campus beauty, the opportunity to be a part of the land-grant experiment, and to create a progressive and inventive spirit that we call the Cyclone experience. Appreciate what we have here, for it is indeed, one of a kind.

Economics: Labor And Health In South Asia By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel Mar 2006

Economics: Labor And Health In South Asia By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

In Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, inferior terms of women’s employment perpetuate their subordination in family and society and impact their health adversely. How women are paid and valued in the fields, factories, and offices has direct bearing on women workers’ status within and outside the workplace. The statistical profile of women’s work in South Asia reveals ahigh maternal mortality rate, adverse sex ratios, low levels of literacy, the highest work participation of women in agriculture, and women’s estimated earned income as less than half that of men, signifying the undervaluation and unpaid nature of women’s productive economic …

Its Hour Come Round At Last, Hal Charles

Charlie Sweet

Caught up in the bright lights of the modern world, it is easy to pretend that the old myths and legends have lost their hold over our hearts and imaginations. Sometimes, when we least expect it, the old archetypes return in terrifying new forms. Gods and Monsters is an anthology that explores these themes with fifteen new tales of the fantastic from some of the brightest new talent in fantasy and horror.

A Participatory Approach To Learning Sustainability Feb 2006

A Participatory Approach To Learning Sustainability

Sandra Wooltorton

I contend that for progress towards a sustainable future, we need an understanding of sustainability as having a core of reconnective learning as an inbuilt ‘driver’. Many writers such as Sterling (2001: 19) call for the elaboration of a new, lived paradigm of sustainable education and learning sustainability. In this chapter, I use notions of primary and secondary meaning and Heron’s (1996) and Reason’s (2004) framework of experiential, presentational, propositional and practical knowledge to propose a transformative, reconnective process for learning sustainability. I articulate a holistic, relational ontology and a participatory epistemology as the basis of the participatory approach. The …

Law And The Fabric Of The Everyday: Settlement Houses, Sociological Jurisprudence, And The Gendering Of Urban Legal Culture, Felice J. Batlan Jan 2006

Law And The Fabric Of The Everyday: Settlement Houses, Sociological Jurisprudence, And The Gendering Of Urban Legal Culture, Felice J. Batlan

Felice J Batlan

This Article argues that at the turn of the twentieth century, settlement houses were particularly important and vibrant legal sites, in which women settlement workers played groundbreaking and multiple legal roles.' Settlement houses created a geographical and intellectual space where diverse parties participated in analyzing, examining, discussing, popularizing, producing, and reforming law. More broadly, settlement houses were part of a rich and prolific urban legal environment that produced and prompted legal innovation and experimentation. Surprisingly, however, legal scholars have almost entirely neglected the groundbreaking legal work that settlement houses performed. Such neglect results in an impoverished understanding of fin-de-siecle legal …

Collaborative Games: Lessons Learned From Board Games, Jose Zagal, Rick Jochen, Hsi Idris Dec 2005

Collaborative Games: Lessons Learned From Board Games, Jose Zagal, Rick Jochen, Hsi Idris

Jose P Zagal

Collaborative mechanisms are starting to become prominent in computer games, like massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs); however, by their nature, these games are difficult to investigate. Game play is often complex and the underlying mechanisms are frequently opaque. In contrast, board games are simple. Their game play is fairly constrained and their core mechanisms are transparent enough to analyze. In this article, the authors seek to understand collaborative games. Because of their simplicity, they focus on board games. The authors present an analysis of collaborative games. In particular, they focus on Reiner Knizia’s LORDOFTHERINGS, considered by many to be the …

Continuing The Mission Of St. Vincent De Paul: Insights On Vincentian Leadership Practices At Depaul University, Marco Tavanti Dec 2005

Continuing The Mission Of St. Vincent De Paul: Insights On Vincentian Leadership Practices At Depaul University, Marco Tavanti

Marco Tavanti

The mission of St. Vincent de Paul was one that was absolutely clear and absolutely simple. His mission was to serve. His mission was to provide service that empowered. His mission was to provide service that liberated. That service was provided to human beings, to people whom he recognized as being his brothers and sisters. He also provided to communities because communities are made up of human beings and you can’t liberate human beings, you can’t empower human beings, without empowering and liberating the communities they are a part of. And so DePaul University continues that mission of service, that …

Icons As Ideology: A Media Construction, Judith (Judie) Cross Dec 2005

Icons As Ideology: A Media Construction, Judith (Judie) Cross

Judith (Judie) L Cross

Despite mass-produce images being predominantly two dimensional, readers usually perceive them three dimensionally. The direction, position and movement of visual elements, such as gaze, within image texts cue this perception, signifying particular relations within space-time. Readers often interpret these relations subconsciously, or at least without serious reflection on how particular image relations affect modality and meaning. Kress and van Leeuwen (1990, 1996) have initiated many readers of images into the significance of four directions in physical space, but the following paper focuses on the significance of the other two: background/foreground or in/out. I analyse a specific genre of visual text, …
