Although much work has previously been done on teaching the illiterate, I feel that much of it is quite rhetorical, theorical, and not complete or easy to follow. This paper dwells on a very practical approach to teaching the illiterate how to read and write, much of which I have devised, used, and tested its validity.
I have proceeded from assuming the student is at point zero and built his ability to read and write through the use of specific activities appropriate to his level of competency.

Few ESL teacher programs in the United States offer such compatibility highly trained humanistic instructors than the MAT program at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Nonetheless, most of the studies at this institution are geared to teaching in a private language academy abroad or in the United States. Yet, a real need for competent ESL teachers exists in our country within the public domain. There are three components to the resource materials in this project. There are: a packet of approximately one hundred small (3'' x 5'') index cards, a packet of about two hundred large ( 4'' x 6'') index cards, and a type-written paper. The small index cards contain statistical information, the large index cards contain quotations, and the paper has an introduction to the entire project and the numerical distribution of responses to a questionnarie entitled: "The Typical American". This is a collection of basic survival English instructional materials for adult Spanish speaking migrant workers. The materials were developed under a U.S. Office of Education Right to read Grant through the Mid-Columbia regional Library in Kennewick, Washington from 1973-74 and were used in teaching migrant workers in the agricultural area of Eastern Washington.
The materials consist of an explanation of the program and 19 lessons, each based around a grammatical point. Each lesson includes dialogues relevant to the needs of adult migrants, picture and written handouts related to migrant needs, and an explanation of each lesson. All materials are …
