People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Ethical practice of animal- assisted interventions (AAI) requires appropriate qualifications and experience for all parties involved. Recently introduced and updated Standards of Practice emphasize the importance of AAI- specific training and qualification for different types of AAI, which should only be delivered within the scope of one’s professional competence. The purpose of this study was (1) to explore how a self- selected group of practitioners delivering AAI describe their work in relation to recent attempts to develop a terminological consensus (IAHAIO, 2014, 2018), and (2) to describe how AAI best practice recommendations (AAII, 2018) are implemented into professional practice among …

For my project, we chose to do a thesis so that it would better help me out in the future in the case I wanted to get my PhD. My thesis so far has been to develop software that will help POD sites better be able to train their volunteers in the case of an emergency. We have already collected some data for our research from a test POD site that was constructed. We took data on the amount of time it took each volunteer to get an individual actor through the line depending on whether they learned via teacher …

Using Pbl To Prepare Educators And Emergency Managers To Plan For Severe Weather, Sarah L. Stalker, Theresa Cullen, Kevin Kloesel
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Within the past 10 years severe weather has been responsible for an annual average of 278 fatalities in the United States (National Weather Service, 2013). During severe weather special populations are populations of high concentrations of people that cannot respond quickly. Schools show both of these characteristics. The average lead time for tornadoes is only 11 minutes (Simmons & Sutter, 2008), so decisions must be made decisively and leaders must be prepared in advance. This paper describes how an instructional design process was used to develop an interdisciplinary problem based learning training for both school personnel and emergency managers. In …

Teaching and Learning Technologies Presentations
Purdue University’s faculty members have been using the same course management system, Blackboard Vista™, for more than 5 years. With the operational lifespan of Blackboard Vista coming to an end, Purdue implemented Blackboard Learn™ as its new course management system. Purdue’s Teaching and Learning Technologies team was faced with helping faculty not only move their existing content from Blackboard Vista to Blackboard Learn, but also to train them on the new system. In this session, learn how Purdue’s Educational Technologists assisted faculty with the transition by developing a variety of classroom-based training modules from demonstration style to hands-on and self-paced. …

Teaching and Learning Technologies Presentations
At Purdue University, the central IT organization (Information Technology at Purdue) is charged with helping instructors (Faculty, staff, and graduate students) use technology to enhance teaching and learning. Our group develops workshops (face-to-face and online)) and documentation (written, video, etc.) to assist in this effort.
This presentation describes
- The Facilitator Maturation Process - the steps our facilitators must take to go from a new hire to an independently deploy-able trainer
- Recent steps we took to redesign our workshops to make them more engaging and instill active learning techniques in their delivery.
- The documentation creation process/workflow we instituted to streamline and …

New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond
This book addresses the continued lack of the diversity in veterinary medicine, the least inclusive of all medical professions. Effective navigation of the complexity of diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine requires clear enumeration, recognition, and understanding of key issues, challenges, and opportunities. In a nation with rapidly changing demographics, public needs and expectations of the veterinary profession will continue to evolve. A more diverse scientific workforce is required to feed the veterinary profession, not just for the purposed of equity, but as necessity for its sustainability and relevance. The book lays out the history of diversity in the veterinary profession, …
