How Much Do U.S. University Students Know, And Want To Know, About Sustainability And Green Building? The Findings Of A Survey, And Possible Implications For General Elective Curricula., Jeremy R. Farner
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
Using the survey approach, this investigation examined the attitudes and interest of college students at two universities in different geographic locations within the United States. Approximately 24,000 students from all disciplines and majors at Weber State University (WSU) in Utah, and 4,000 at Purdue University in Indiana, were invited to participate in a study to determine current knowledge, familiarity, and interest in topics within the sustainability and Green Building educational arena. The goal of this study was to determine what students already know, would like to know, and how much interest there would be in developing …
How Do Millennial Engineering And Technology Students Experience Learning Through Traditional Teaching Methods Employed In The University Setting?, Elizabeth A. Howard
How Do Millennial Engineering And Technology Students Experience Learning Through Traditional Teaching Methods Employed In The University Setting?, Elizabeth A. Howard
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
The purpose of the study was to document and analyze how Millennial engineering and technology students experience learning in large lecture classrooms. To help achieve this purpose, perceptions Millennials have toward traditional teaching methods employed in large lecture classes were analyzed and discussed. Additionally, this study documented how Millennials experienced technology within large lecture classrooms. A learning model depicting how Millennials experience learning within the large lecture classroom was created based on the results of this study. This model employed three separate tools utilized within the large lecture classroom. These tools: Lecture, Technology, and Homework, work together to synthesize learning …

Stereoscopic Visualization As A Tool For Learning Astronomy Concepts, Norman M. Joseph
Stereoscopic Visualization As A Tool For Learning Astronomy Concepts, Norman M. Joseph
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
Three-dimensional (3D) visualization is becoming an extensively used educational tool. 3D visualization tends to be most useful when demonstrating concepts involving the very large – such as astronomy, or the very small – such as nanotechnology. Stereo visualization allows students to familiarize and immerse themselves in worlds which are difficult or impossible to experience in real life. This study will evaluate the educational benefit of teaching lessons involving a highly spatially-oriented topic (astronomy) using stereoscopic visualization technology.
We have used a stereoscopic visualization system, installed in a classroom, to deploy 3D simulation packages for use in classroom instruction. This educational …
Using A Serious Game To Motivate High School Students To Want To Learn About History, Marin M. Petkov
Using A Serious Game To Motivate High School Students To Want To Learn About History, Marin M. Petkov
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
Serious games are games, whose primary goal is not entertainment, but instead
education (Michael & Chen, 2005). They have the capability of presenting the
educational material into a way that is more engaging than traditional classroom
instruction. The researcher has decided to develop a serious game called
National Pastime. National Pastime is an online role playing game with the main
goal of motivating high school students to learn about the Japanese internment
camps that were established in the United States during World War II. The game
intends to improve the students’ motivation with its engaging story and gameplay.
Flight Operational Quality Assurance For University Aviation Operations, Lauren Vala
Flight Operational Quality Assurance For University Aviation Operations, Lauren Vala
Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects
The ability to use quantitative, objective flight data in order to improve training and operations has dramatically changed in the last decade. By taking advantage of hundreds of sensor collecting digital data on single engine aircraft, the use of Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) programs become more feasible for non-airline operations. With the integration of FOQA data use into university aviation operations, multiple opportunities exist for a complete utilization of this data in a variety of applications.
There are many barriers to overcome during implementation and use of FOQA data in the training environment. The goals and efforts of university …
Visual Learning Styles Among Digital Natives, Eric Palmer
Visual Learning Styles Among Digital Natives, Eric Palmer
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
This study explored the concept of digital nativity and its educational implications, including application of the learning styles hypothesis. The concept of digital natives, first put forth by Marc Prensky, introduced the notion that individuals raised in a technological environment have developed in such a way as to utilize information differently than the non-native generations before them. This study examined the possibility that these differences may include an increased efficiency in the utilization of narrative imagery versus textual information. The potential benefit of utilizing narrative imagery as an instructional tool is discussed. An experimental test application was developed for the …
Comparisons Between Educational Map Software Displaying Soil Data, Laura A. Kocur
Comparisons Between Educational Map Software Displaying Soil Data, Laura A. Kocur
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
The use of technology in the classroom is becoming more widespread, and the area of agronomy is no different. Utilization of various mapping technology is more common in instructional components in the classroom, although the impacts of software usability have not yet been explored. Maps available over the Internet are identified as an area in which usability is not known, nor are there any fixed standards or conventions to govern the display of them. The recently developed mapping prototype is intended to increase accessibility to map data used in class, as well as make it easier to use the data. …
Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study Of Students And Research Faculty, Jake R. Carlson, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller, Megan R. Sapp Nelson
Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study Of Students And Research Faculty, Jake R. Carlson, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller, Megan R. Sapp Nelson
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Researchers increasingly need to integrate the disposition, management and curation of their data into their current workflows. However, it is not yet clear to what extent faculty and students are sufficiently prepared to take on these responsibilities. This paper articulates the need for a data information literacy program (DIL) to prepare students to engage in such an “e-research” environment. Assessments of faculty interviews and student performance in a geoinformatics course provide complementary sources of information, which are then filtered through the perspective of ACRL’s information literacy competency standards to produce a draft set of outcomes for a data information literacy …
Input Distribution Influences Degree Of Auxiliary Use By Children With Specific Language Impairment, Laurence B. Leonard, Patricia Deevy
Input Distribution Influences Degree Of Auxiliary Use By Children With Specific Language Impairment, Laurence B. Leonard, Patricia Deevy
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Children with specific language impairment (SLI) show a protracted period of inconsistent use of tense/agreement morphemes. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether this inconsistent use could be attributed to the children’s misinterpretations of particular syntactic structures in the input. In Study 1, preschool-aged children with SLI and typically developing peers heard sentences containing novel verbs preceded by auxiliary was or sentences in which the novel verb formed part of a nonfinite subject-verb sequence within a larger syntactic structure (e.g. We saw the dog relling ). The children were then tested on their use of the novel verbs …
Institutionalizing Information Literacy, Sharon A. Weiner
Institutionalizing Information Literacy, Sharon A. Weiner
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Information literacy is recognized globally as essential for individual and community empowerment, workforce readiness, and global competitiveness. Recent international efforts related to information literacy have the goal of mainstreaming it in educational systems and in societies. However, there is a history of difficulty in integrating it with the educational process. This integration with the educational process may be referred to as institutionalization. Although the goal of colleges and universities is to graduate information literate critical thinkers, there is no established strategy for instilling this competency in students. This paper proposes that a lack of understanding of the organizational functioning …
