You Belong Here: A Critical Look At Community Engagement In Museum Education Through K-16 Place Based Pedagogy, Janelle O'Malley

Student Projects

Historically museums exist as object centered spaces with little consideration of the community and artists that support them. Therefore museums as pedagogical sites must reorient themselves to become people centered spaces incorporating participatory pedagogical experiences for both community members and artists.

There is a lack of research in place-based pedagogies in museum education. It is important now more than ever to recognize the need to center community in museum education. This study will seek to investigate how museums can exact meaningful change through their educational practices and create a sense of belonging in museums for their immediate community. The outcomes …

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications

This study investigates six university professors' reflections on the shift to remote instruction during the Spring 2020 semester in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The rapid shift in instructional platform presents an opportunity to learn from unresolved challenges that persisted through the semester. Here we present a qualitative study of how experienced (i.e., associate or full) chemistry professors report their teaching practices in light of the COVID-19 disruptions. We observed four major themes: personal factors, contextual factors of the structure and culture, teacher thinking, and teachers' practice. These themes revealed that the professors in this study adapted quickly using …

Identifying Barriers Faced By Adult Learners In General Educational Development Programs, Matthew Patrick Beasland

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

It is estimated that 70% of all newly created jobs in Illinois by 2020 will need education beyond a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma. In Illinois, 12% of adults 25 and older do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent. Individuals without a high school diploma or GED are twice as likely to be unemployed and if they are employed are more likely to be in a low-wage position. On average an individual without a high school diploma or GED will earn roughly $10,000 less annually. Given the increasing need for a high school …

Assessment Of Faculty Acceptance Of, Behavioral Intention To Use, And Actual Usage Behavior Of Technology In Inquiry-Based Learning In Medical Education: Using The Unified Theory Of Acceptance And Use Of Technology, Max Carl Anderson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is an umbrella term used in this quantitative study to describe three different, yet related teaching methodologies: case-based learning (CBL), problem-based learning (PBL), and team-based learning (TBL). Each of these IBL activities involves a problem or situation for students in teams to find solutions. The problems to be solved have the most impact for students when they are connected to a real-life situation. While none of the three methodologies require the use of educational technology to be successfully implemented, there are situations where it could augment or improve content delivery. In medical education, situational problems for students …

From Mcinnis To Adequacy: The Relationship Between School Funding Litigation And Illinois K-12 Public Education Funding Policy, Joel Filas

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Illinois K-12 public school funding has long been characterized by large inter-district disparities in per-pupil expenditures. A primary reason for this characterization was the Illinois legislature’s heavy reliance on local property tax within the various school funding formulas historically used to determine school revenues. The heavy reliance on local property taxes as the primary source of funding for Illinois schools has contributed to one of the largest funding gaps between the state’s highest and lowest property wealth school districts in the United States. The heavy reliance on local property taxes has led to low property wealth school districts receiving a …

Art Assessment Policy And Practice At The High School Level: Validity, Reliability, And Resistance, Deborah N. Filbin

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

National education reform policies that have increased reliance on standardized testing in subjects like reading and math as a way to judge the quality of a teacher’s performance have created challenges for educators in visual art and design when they are required to provide data about student growth. Art teachers who utilize alternate forms of assessment to judge the quality of student artwork as evidence of learning can potentially be in a precarious position because of underlying assumptions that these types of qualitative assessments lack validity. In this context, when compared to colleagues in traditionally tested disciplines, art educators face …
