Assessing Language Learners In Mathematics: A Single-Subject Ab Quasi-Experimental Study Exploring The Impact Of Dual Language And Monolingual Classrooms On Achievement, Molly M. Scheidt

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Dual language classrooms provide instruction for language learners to use their first language (L1) as well as their second language (L2) to learn academic content. The goal of the study was to impact the decision-making among educational leaders who may be challenged by the dual language classroom due to the logistics and financial demands such a program possesses for school district leaders. A single-subject AB quasi-experimental study explored the impact of one monolingual mathematic classroom and making it into a dual language classroom providing a Spanish interpreter during whole group math instruction time. The model that was delivered replicates what …

Then on top of the “usual” technology in the classroom, our educators are now battling with AI resources that are being improperly utilized. Instead of training teachers how to use AI sites, it seems the school system …

Responses from the focus group were used to inform the questions in the six semi-structured interviews conducted with high …

High School Students’ Perceptions Of School Supports Toward Graduation: A Correlational Study, Heather Giese May 2024

High School Students’ Perceptions Of School Supports Toward Graduation: A Correlational Study, Heather Giese

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Addressing barriers to high school graduation is essential to decreasing dropout rates. Schools provide various supports for students on their pathway to graduation with varying effects on preventing dropout. Research studies indicate that students’ perceptions of the school and staff influence educational attainment. This post-positivist, correlational research study examined three research questions including students’ perceptions of the school and staff, students’ perceptions of graduation supports, and whether specific supports correlate to more positive student perceptions of the school and staff. Through a convenience sample, 21 students at a small, alternative high school in Minnesota completed two questionnaires. Questionnaires consisted of …

Gifted Students With Physical And Health Disabilities: Characteristics, Identification, And Programming, Terence Friedrichs

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The public has long known about famous gifted persons with physical and health disabilities (P/HDs). However, many school-based gifted or special educators may not believe that such K-12 youth can be gifted or have these disabilities, or they may not know how to serve these students exceptionalities. This capstone paper, a 1995-2023 update of a 1977-94 literature search from gifted P/HD educational and psychology journals which led to the author’s Distinguishing Traits of Gifted Students with Disabilities (Friedrichs, 2001), strives like the preceding paper to illuminate reader understanding of gifted P/HD students. The new document specifically conveys to special and …

Most Likely To Succeed: Which Factors Influence College Students In Completing Their Two-Year Computer Degree And Graduating From College, Nathan Blommel

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

For many individuals, researching and finding a college to attend is a wonderful experience. Many students explore college and take multiple courses, but do not finish their intended degree. Past and current studies have identified factors and reasons to why students dropout from college. Two well-known theories include A.W. Astin’s student involvement theory (1984) and Tinto’s (1993) model of college student attrition. The purpose of this study was to identify factors amongst students who graduated and students who did not graduate from a two-year computer degree program. The data derived from the collective stories of those who had experienced it. …

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Higher education institutions were becoming more competitive due to meeting the needs of changing demographics of prospective students, increasing costs of tuition, fees, and operations, meeting workforce demands, providing access to high quality technology tools, and more. A merger process impacted employee engagement, satisfaction and burnout. It was important for administrators in higher education to create and maintain a supportive and inclusive culture for employees, especially during each stage of the merger process. It was also important to clearly communicate the purpose of the merger, and to provide employees an opportunity to engage with the planning and implementation stages of …

The Impact Of The Master Schedule On Student Perception Of Teacher-Student Relationships In Minnesota Middle Schools, Jonathon Graff May 2024

The Impact Of The Master Schedule On Student Perception Of Teacher-Student Relationships In Minnesota Middle Schools, Jonathon Graff

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Teacher-student relationships have been shown to have a marked decline at the transition to middle school (Hughes & Cao, 2018). The decline has been linked to a potential mismatch between middle school structure and the unique needs of the young adolescents that they serve (Eccles et al., 1993). This quantitative, correlational study explored the impact of school master schedules (i.e., school structure) on teacher-student relationships (i.e., TSRs) in Minnesota middle schools. The study searched for potential associations between student perceived teacher care and master scheduling type with the intent to fill a gap in literature and to help inform district …

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) added Division II men’s golf in 1963. Since then, teams in the South/Southeast (S/SE) NCAA Region have been dominant, with the last nine of 11 national champions from schools in Florida. These coaches were interviewed individually or set into focus groups within the S/SE and Central/Midwest NCAA Regions. …

Analyzing Phonics Curriculum For Early Learning, Candice Schultz May 2024

Analyzing Phonics Curriculum For Early Learning, Candice Schultz

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Abstract

Debate surrounding the use of phonics instruction within the classroom to improve reading in young children continues across the country. Some may say that the reading curriculum used covers the core parts of phonics allowing children to learn essential skills within their reading lessons. Others may argue that though this may be true, children need additional work with phonics to further develop their reading skills. The state of Minnesota has introduced the READ Act which indicates the need for research-based reading curriculums providing instruction that is rich in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading fluency, and reading comprehension (MDE). Research …

Student-Centered Task Box Instruction, Mikayla Meece May 2024

Student-Centered Task Box Instruction, Mikayla Meece

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Engagement is vital to all learning situations and has, according to Parsons et al. (2018) been associated with an increase in student achievement. Morgan (2013) highlighted that students comprehend little and lose focus of classroom instruction when teachers fail to use differentiated instruction. Therefore, the researcher in this project utilized task box instruction to increase student engagement and on-task behavior in Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) classrooms. Task-box instruction can accommodate for different ability levels and interests, while also modeling initial learning and providing practice with developmentally appropriate skills and strategies (Morgan, 2013). Specifically, task boxes involve providing students with …

A “How To Guide” Of Tier 2 Reading Interventions, Nolan Coyle Apr 2024

A “How To Guide” Of Tier 2 Reading Interventions, Nolan Coyle

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

My topic is a “how to” guide in the area of tier 2 classroom interventions for literacy focused particularly for grades 4-6. As someone who has worked in special education for 5 years, I occasionally get students on my caseload and I wonder if they could have succeeded in the general education classroom with appropriate interventions. At other times, students have progressed so rapidly that I wonder if interventions were ever implemented. Perhaps the wrong interventions were implemented, or maybe interventions were not implemented properly. In my own practice the number of students receiving reading services on my own caseload …
