Trauma-Informed Practices In Education, Ashley Winfield
Trauma-Informed Practices In Education, Ashley Winfield
Honors Projects and Presentations: Undergraduate
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a set of guidelines regarding trauma-informed practices in the medical field. When working with individuals who have experienced trauma, the way in which we interact with them matters. What is less standard than these CDC guidelines, though, is how to best support students who have experienced some level of trauma or adverse childhood experiences (ACES) in the classroom. How can we equip educators with the tools needed to support students in their classrooms who have experienced trauma? Transforming Education created a list of five key trauma-informed social-emotional learning principles to guide teachers …

Educational Reform In The Old Eighth Ward - With Biography Of William Howard Day, Drew Hermeling, Digital Harrisburg
Educational Reform In The Old Eighth Ward - With Biography Of William Howard Day, Drew Hermeling, Digital Harrisburg
Look Up, Look Out
In the early days of the Old Eighth Ward, education was segregated and the responsibility of church communities. Thomas Dorsey founded a school for “colored children, both free and bound,” in 1817 in the Wesley Union AME Zion church building. Eventually, a three story building, located between the Jennings Foundry and the Wesley Union church, known as “Franklin Hall” became the primary educational home of the Ward’s pupils. However, Franklin Hall was poorly suited for educating children. J. Howard Wert, writing in the Patriot, described the conditions there, stating that they
“were of the poorest; the rooms were destitute of …
Exploration Of Positive Teacher-Student Relationships In The Online Context Of Vipkid, Elise R. Mcclelland
Exploration Of Positive Teacher-Student Relationships In The Online Context Of Vipkid, Elise R. Mcclelland
Graduate Education Student Scholarship
In this paper, I explore how VIPKid teachers build positive relationships with students in their unique online context. I began by establishing the need, importance, and nature of positive teacher-student relationships. I included the results of a survey given to 36 VIPKid teachers in order to better understand the perspective of these teachers on positive relationships with students, what barriers these teachers face in building relationships, and what techniques they employ to build relationships. I found that the results imply that in order to build better relationships with students, VIPKid teachers must communicate care for their students despite barriers they …
Implementing Student-Centered Accommodations In Mathematics, Stephanie Grosko
Implementing Student-Centered Accommodations In Mathematics, Stephanie Grosko
Graduate Education Student Scholarship
This project explores the necessary need to create and implement accommodations for low achieving learners and high achieving learners in mathematics, specifically addition and subtraction at the kindergarten level. Currently, there are no accommodations provided in the mathematic curriculum to support these groups of students and ensure they continue to succeed and grow. Research data was collected and analyzed to determine the types of accommodations that are most beneficial to these two groups of learners. Through the research findings, accommodations were discovered and included in the final project to create a student-centered learning environment called the Rainforest Math Cove. The …
Behavior Modification: Addressing The Challenging Behaviors Within An Early Childhood Program, Marie Gewiss
Behavior Modification: Addressing The Challenging Behaviors Within An Early Childhood Program, Marie Gewiss
Graduate Education Student Scholarship
Addressing challenging behaviors in our Early Childhood Programs will always be a topic of concern for the teachers as well as for the students. One solution in avoiding misbehavior is to find the antecedent before the behavior can begin to be a disruption. A discussion of the consequences are also important aspects for children and adults to understand when thinking about how to control an unwanted act of aggression. “Aggressive behavior usually follows an event that the patient perceives as provocative. Types of provocation include perceptions of disrespectful treatment; unfairness/injustice; frustration/interruption; annoying traits, and irritations” (Daffern & Tonkin, 2010, para. …
Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Special Education: Teacher And Outcome Proficiency Self-Rating Form Ensuring Assessment Competency, Tyler Edward Herman
Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Special Education: Teacher And Outcome Proficiency Self-Rating Form Ensuring Assessment Competency, Tyler Edward Herman
Graduate Education Student Scholarship
This Master’s project investigated current research literature for prevailing prereferral and referral processes of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students to special education evaluation. To that end, this Master’s project sought to strengthen the validity of the referral process for CLD students by creating a self-rating form to guide teachers in accurately differentiating CLD students who are in need of receiving special education services from those who do not need such services. The self-rating form is founded on three competencies of multicultural teacher efficacy and requires teachers to reflect on classroom-level, team collaboration, prereferral, and referral practices. Limitations and suggestions …

A Teaching Strategy For A Christian Virtual Environment, Andrew Babyak
Business Educator Scholarship
The current landscape in education is changing rapidly as online learning programs are experiencing great growth. As online learning grows, many professors and students are entering into new learning environments for the first time. While online learning has proven to be successful in many cases, it is not a journey upon which Christian professors or students should begin without some preparation. This article articulates a basic Christian teaching strategy by providing recommendations for those who are entering the online environment for the first time or desire to improve their online teaching effectiveness. These principles and recommendations are presented so that …
