First-generation college students have grown in numbers on college campus’ but continue to be a population that has lower completion numbers for their bachelor’s degree. TRIO and other first-generation college programming on college campus’ can contribute to better success of this population. However, first-generation college student’s sense of belonging should be added to campus’ initiatives to promote better retention of students.

In U.S. history, people who have any form of disabilities have been overlooked, hidden at home and other were sent away. Much like minorities who enter the US educational system and are often times placed in remedial classes or special education due to their language barrier. The over-representation of minorities in special education classes has sparked researchers’ interest in determining if being multi-lingual can cause any form of learning disability. The purpose of this research study is to explore the barriers and needs of Bahamian single mothers to obtaining higher education. A needs assessment survey was administered via social media and 78 single mothers responded. Human services and educational institutions practitioners were also interviewed to understand their perspective of the needs and to map the resources currently available for single mothers in the Bahamas. The research assume that limited financial resources, lack of child care, lack of transportation, limited access to resources and lack of family support would have been the main barriers found. A critical component of educational outcomes for individuals with disabilities is the implementation of a transition plan. Transition plans are applied throughout the individuals’ educational career to provide a positive and comfortable shift from school to postschool life whether that be continuing education or employment. School nutrition standards for school lunches have changed considerably over the years, and while the foods are meeting the needed nutritional requirements, they’re not appealing or kid-friendly for young children. While there are successes within the updated standards, there are still flaws found from current services that are offered within schools, competitive foods, such as vending machine snacks, being one of the main issues. The activities in which children and youth engage while outside of school hours are critical to their development, highlighting the need for quality afterschool programs that engage students – regardless of gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or minority classification. STEM Ready set out to study the effectiveness of an experiential education pedagogy approach in the design of a professional workshop for undergraduate volunteers who work directly with these marginalized populations in afterschool programs.
