The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the experiences of early childhood education teachers at a rural, low-income, elementary school in southern New Jersey instructing literacy to ELL and low-income students at the Bridgeton Public School District. The theory guiding this study is Vygotsky’s theories on social-cultural interaction, the Zone of Proximal Development, and scaffolding. An increasing number of these students also qualify for special education services. Students in either group have underperformed compared with their general education peers for years, and the basic academic proficiency levels of these students are concerning when either language proficiency or disability is considered separately. Giftedness occurs in all sectors of society, but children from underprivileged backgrounds are often underrepresented in gifted programs. Universal screening for giftedness is a strategy employed by some school districts in an attempt to provide equal access to gifted programs. Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards, Florida’s most recent K-12 educational standards to promote literacy, lack the rising art of Spoken Word Poetry. However, Florida’s Department of Education should integrate Spoken Word into Florida’s Secondary curriculum. Spoken Word Poetry, by its definition, holds researched benefits that align with the B.E.S.T. Standard’s poetry recommendations and literacy-centered goals. In light of such benefits, Florida’s Department of Education should consider various Spoken Word poets and poems to include in Florida’s Secondary Curriculum, as well as explore the resources and integration methods included in this thesis for both teachers and students.

English language learners continue to be a growing demographic in American schools. Despite this, linguistically diverse students’ academic achievement continues to lag behind their native English-speaking counterparts. Historically, language proficiency measures have measured language proficiency in terms of social English, neglecting the importance of academic language development. This quantitative study investigates the relationship between Hispanic high school English language learners’ English language proficiency and mathematical resilience using a Pearson’s r and Spearman’s r correlation tests. The sample population consists of 9th-12th grade students enrolled in a large public high school in the northeast whose native language is Spanish. English proficiency is measured using the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test. Mathematic resilience is measured using the Mathematical Resilience Scale. With the recent rise in immigration, the demographics of the American classroom are changing. English Language Learners are becoming more common, and with this change comes the challenge of effectively educating them. Unfortunately, this demographic has been observed to have a major achievement gap, as many students are placed in mainstream classrooms without basic literacy skills. This gap can be bridged through intentional focus on literacy with these students. This thesis examines styles of education for English Language Learners and instructional strategies in an effort to identify which styles and strategies can bridge the literacy and achievement gap most effectively.

As school districts are facing increasing pressure to meet annual yearly progress goals based upon the No Child Left Behind legislation (2001), teacher preparation and effectiveness, especially in teaching specific subgroups, is an issue that resonates with many educators today. This quantitative, causal-comparative study examined the impact teachers who have obtained an ESOL endorsement have on standardized test scores in six high schools within one district in northeast Georgia.
