Adult learners with an intellectual disability have legal protections to access post-secondary learning and vocational opportunities. As individuals strive to maximize potential in the disability space, do cultural barriers of racism disrupt the potential for African American adult learners with intellectual disabilities? One implicit assumption is that race and social status affect advocacy efforts for learners during K-12 experiences, and the adult learners’ ability to self-advocate.

Experiences of profiling, racism and discrimination are a part of life for many students in America. Perceptions of non-white, African International students about African American students is influenced by stereotypes and inadequate historical context of Black American experiences. This qualitative study addresses Black students from various parts of the African diaspora's experiences of racism, and perceptions of race/ethnic-based biases during their educational experiences in a predominantly white institution (PWI), through semi-structured interviews.

Social justice narrative inquiry is an important research methodology in social justice research, especially for when examining the intersectionality of race and sexual orientation. This paper intends to: 1) conceptualize how social justice narrative inquiry contributes to knowledge production in the field of adult education in terms of positionality and its influence on the web of power dynamics; 2) theorize social justice narrative inquiries for social justice education and social justice research; and 3) demonstrate how a queer crit perspective (a queer perspective under Critical Race Theory) can be used in social justice narrative inquiry. This qualitative research study investigated the role played by white theological seminary student participation in the Student Interracial Ministry (1960-1968) in the transformation of the participants’ racial perspectives. The central theoretical framework was transformative learning. The role of racism as a disorienting dilemma; interpersonal, affective, and spiritual/religious factors, and transformative learning across the lifespan were explored.

One of our core beliefs is that we, as adult educators, are responsible for providing environments that include spaces where dialogues of race and racism occur, which facilitate the learning and transformation of students, our practice and ourselves. However, as white faculty we find ourselves caught in a fabric woven of power and privilege that constantly challenges us to recognize how we live in the paradox of contributing to the ongoing nature of racism as we simultaneously try to transform it.
