Abstract
Research and relevant literature have shown that school connectedness is not only associated with but has a profound impact on students’ mental health and academic achievement. School connectedness is a factor that can be influenced directly by the school environment and by interventions aimed at helping students that take place during school. School counselors carry out many of these interventions and have a responsibility to promote safe and protective environments for all students. This article addresses some of the factors that contribute to low achievement observed in African American students. It is common that either schools or school districts are unable to fix the problem or they are unaware about how the beliefs and attitudes about African American students can contribute to their low performance in school. Effects Of Summer School On Academic Achievement: Reducing Summer Learning Loss In Middle School, Angela Joy Aumaugher

Summer learning loss has been implicated in the achievement gap between economically advantaged and disadvantaged students. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a summer school program on the degree of summer learning loss and academic achievement of middle school students. Participants included a census of middle school students who attended the summer school program at a small public charter school in the Midwest between the fall of 2010 and the spring of 2014. Achievement and learning loss were determined based on fall and spring testing using the Northwest Evaluation Association’s Measures for Academic Progress test, …
