Research has indicated that college students experience bias from college faculty on a regular bias. However, there is no mandated training for college faculty on the various forms of bias and the impact that it can have on students’ ability to be successful. While bias influences many students, students of color, women, LGBTQ+ students, and students from of different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds experience bias at greater rates than white students. This project examines culturally responsive teaching in the art education classroom. As diversity in student populations increase in art rooms all across the United States, there is a lack of diversity in the teaching workforce-which remains predominately White and female (Lee, 2012). In order to bridge the overwhelming demographic divide to meet the needs of all students, art teachers must become better positioned to work in increasingly diverse school populations and create meaningful connections to student’s experiences. Educational resources need to be more diverse to better reflect the populations of classroom communities. Students identifying as Lesbian Gay Bisexual and/or Transgender (LGBT), girls and women, and students from ethnically and/or racially marginalized communities are affected by the classroom content they consume and are taught. This project focuses on the impacts of diversity in educational resources and how intersectional Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) can alleviate the harmful impacts of a one-sided narrative in curriculum. A university has an obligation to provide an education to the students and help build the character development of the individual as well. Part of that education journey is focused on the moral development of the students. When studying the gendered and racialized experiences of Black women in higher education, research often focuses solely on faculty members as opposed to student affairs professionals. However, lack of support for Black women student affairs professionals leads to many developing racial battle fatigue. This project explores the effects of the intersection of oppressive systems on Black women student affairs professionals' journey through graduate school to the professional work setting.
