The United States is experiencing a youth mental health crisis. Research suggests rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation have reached concerning levels in transgender and nonbinary youth. School can be a hostile place for marginalized youth. Transgender and nonbinary youth are especially susceptible to harassment and victimization, making school a particularly hostile place. When schools offer support and LGBTQ resources, school experiences can be improved for transgender and nonbinary youth. Unfortunately, school-wide supports and resources for LGBTQ students are less common in middle schools than high schools, leaving many students struggling at a critical developmental stage in their lives. …

Research has shown that students who feel a sense of belonging or personal connectedness in school have higher academic achievement. This project is to help my school Westfield Preparatory High School with its attendance issues. Since COVID, we have struggled to make daily attendance, so I chose this research project to give me better insight based on the issues staff and students gave for chronic absenteeism. Research shows that students who are chronically absent are less likely to graduate and have poorer academic achievement among other issues. Chronically absent students may struggle with attendance for a variety of reasons, and thus individualized interventions are the most effective when dealing with this issue. School counselors can provide school staff with resources to learn to deal with chronically absent students, to monitor attendance progress, and to form positive relationships with these students in order to improve the school’s climate. Rural students continue to be a very misunderstood group in American schools. These students are not exposed to the vast post-secondary career paths available. Rural students face many challenges, such as low-income communities, cultural barriers, parental support, parental education, and school support. As a result, there is a need for greater awareness and interventions created by schools to reach the needs of this student population. This project will critically analyze literature on the rural students’ experience in American Public schools and propose targeted intervention strategies such as small group counseling as a best practice for this student population.
