Introductory Mathematics And Stem Persistence: Examining The Differences Between Online And In-Person Performance At A Hbcu, Wendy Dixie
Online Theses and Dissertations
The United States is losing its position as an innovative global leader because of a shortage of skilled workers in STEM. This decline is due in part to the US producing a lower number of graduates from STEM related fields. One reason for the shortage is that US students are selecting or graduating with STEM majors at a lower rate than those of competing countries. As a result of these shortages, the US has undertaken several initiatives to increase public awareness of and training in STEM that will ultimately produce STEM degrees.
The purpose of this research was to examine …
Kentucky 4-H Minimizes Barriers To Stem Education, Rachel Elizabeth Noble
Kentucky 4-H Minimizes Barriers To Stem Education, Rachel Elizabeth Noble
Online Theses and Dissertations
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs are a national priority. The increase in the number of jobs that require a STEM-minded workforce raises the demand for education systems and communities to focus on fostering the development of STEM competencies of students. American youth are not gaining the skills necessary to compete in the global workforce. This study investigates how Kentucky 4-H minimizes the barriers of accessing STEM programs for youth in grades 4-8. Barriers of accessing STEM programs investigated are: lack of funding and resources, time, professional development, integration across curriculum, and out-of-school experiences. 4-H is the largest youth …
Effectiveness Of A Corequisite Delivery Model For Developmental Mathematics, Katherine E. Fair
Effectiveness Of A Corequisite Delivery Model For Developmental Mathematics, Katherine E. Fair
Online Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental study is to determine the effectiveness of a corequisite delivery model for developmental math students at a 4-year public institution. Nationally, close to fifty percent of incoming college students are placed in non-credit bearing remedial courses (Complete College America, 2012). Students must pass the remedial course before they can take the gateway college-level course. Data show that the traditional delivery of a non-credit-bearing remedial course before taking a credit-bearing course appears to help only a small percentage of students (Complete College America, 2012). The low pass rate of remedial courses supports the current trend …
Impact Of Instructional Coaches On Elementary Mathematical Achievement, Kayla Marie Hibbard
Impact Of Instructional Coaches On Elementary Mathematical Achievement, Kayla Marie Hibbard
Online Theses and Dissertations
Since the passage of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, school leaders have sought to improve student abilities in both math and reading. Although both subjects have made improvements in both delivery and assessment over the years, mathematics still troubles the nation as students continuously fall short of local, state and federal goals (Darling-Hammond, 1998, 2005; Franke et al., 2005; Johnson & Johnson, 2002).
Instructional coaches have become a norm for many districts across the U. S. as districts seek to draw knowledge and leadership from mastery level teachers as they help improve everyday teaching and student learning. …
The Current Status Of Safety In High School Chemical Laboratories In Kentucky, Ahmed Rashed Alyammahi
The Current Status Of Safety In High School Chemical Laboratories In Kentucky, Ahmed Rashed Alyammahi
Online Theses and Dissertations
This project is construed as a follow-up of the study conducted by Dr. Jack Gerlovich and his team to assess the status of science safety in Kentucky high schools in 2003-2004. The current study gathered online responses to an expanded survey from 57 high school chemistry teachers in Kentucky. The survey was developed to find answers to four main questions: What is the current status of safety in high school chemical laboratory in Kentucky? To what extent has this status improved or deteriorated since the creation and publication of the Total Science Safety-The Kentucky Edition CD in 2003? What are …
Student Voices On High School Mathematics Teaching And Learning: College Student Voices On Teacher Behaviors And Actions Impacting High School Mathematics Achievement, Elizabeth Anne Crane
Student Voices On High School Mathematics Teaching And Learning: College Student Voices On Teacher Behaviors And Actions Impacting High School Mathematics Achievement, Elizabeth Anne Crane
Online Theses and Dissertations
According to the national Assessment of Educational Progress the national trend in mathematics achievement has not significantly changed from 1973 through 2012 for 17 year olds (National Center for Educational statistics, 2014). Student beliefs about mathematics learning are an important factor in determining the student's math achievement (Woodward, 2004). This qualitative dissertation explores college student perceptions of effective mathematics teaching and learning at the secondary level. Interview participants who are early in their college program were recruited from math classes at a southeastern university. Study participants reinforced the literature that knowing both the how and the why of mathematics is …
Retaking Summative Assessments At The High School Level, Katherine Gray
Retaking Summative Assessments At The High School Level, Katherine Gray
Online Theses and Dissertations
In 2010, under President Obama, A Blueprint for Reform: The Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act was written to reform the No Child Left Behind Act that was signed into law in 2002 by President George W. Bush. The new goal under the reform was that by 2020 all students will graduate from high school and be college and career ready. With a growing emphasis on all students being successful in the classroom, educators had to explore different methods to implement in the classroom to help all students learn the state standards. Allowing summative assessment retakes was one …
The Effectiveness Of Manipulatives In A High School Algebra Ii Class, Brooke Elizabeth Bruins
The Effectiveness Of Manipulatives In A High School Algebra Ii Class, Brooke Elizabeth Bruins
Online Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the use of manipulatives in high school Algebra II. The effectiveness of the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) Model is compared to explicit instruction. The participants in this study are students from six high school Algebra II classes -two honors classes, and four standard classes. One honors class and two standard classes were randomly selected as the treatment groups receiving CRA instruction. The other three classes learned through abstract explicit instruction. Each class learned two new mathematical concepts, domain and range of quadratic functions and transformations of quadratic functions, through the selected method of instruction. At the end of instruction, …
Increasing Automaticity, Sara Burns
Increasing Automaticity, Sara Burns
Online Theses and Dissertations
Automaticity is defined as the process of developing fluency in mathematics and the ability to answer a basic math problem routinely. Automaticity is one of the most important skills that a student can possess in mathematics. While there are many ways that an educator can implement strategies to increase automaticity in the classroom, the purpose of this study was to determine which of these methods of implementation is more effective: requiring students to practice automaticity three times per week or requiring students to practice automaticity five times per week.
