Teacher preparation programs for STEM education should prepare teachers for all settings, including rural schools. Students across geographic locales show equal interest in STEM fields, but rural students often lack access to highly qualified STEM teachers. UNESCO (2014) notes that the disparity in education between rural and urban schools is a concern of many countries. In the United States, the National Center for Educational Statistics confirms that twenty percent of students are educated in rural schools and the STEM teachers in these schools are often the only STEM expert. A common part of the conversation about Millenials is to describe them as exceptionally technologically-savvy; some have called them "digital natives." But research does not bear this out; people of older generations can be equally tech-savvy, and while many Millenials love their phones and social media, etc., the reality is that all of us are acculturated into a particular era of technology, and members of each generation can exhibit a range of comfort and skill working with different technologies.

Utilizing technology to teach subjects like history or geography can be more challenging than for other subjects. However, Google Earth is a tool that has an opportunity to create an interactive and visual experience that can be used instead of or in conjunction with a more traditional PowerPoint presentation. In this session, I will explain and demonstrate some ways in which I have explored using this tool in a classroom in order to have that more valuable educational experience, along with the results and reactions of its use.

Mulder asserts that as teacher educators move away from stand-alone technology courses towards the integration approach, clear descriptions for what knowledge and skills pre-service teacher must develop are needed. and once decided, faculty in teacher preparation programs will need to clearly articulate an approach for integrating technology into the program. He goes on to explain the TPACK framework, which currently serves as a preeminent model for exploring technology integration in education.
