This study was undertaken to determine if the mentally handicapped child's achievements are higher in subjects and material that are concrete and realistic in nature to the child, rather than the so-called academic subjects based primarily on abstract thinking. Traditionally, most schools have special education classes only in three major academic areas, mathematics, social studies and English. More often than not, these subjects are taught on an academic bases. Industrial arts could be an answer in the search for a suitable curriculum arrangement. The writer will also be concerned with designing an orientation program.
