The purpose of this study is to examine the ways in which preservice secondary mathematics teachers (PSMT) professionally notice middle school students’ mathematical thinking on a technology enhanced mathematical task. The middle school students’ work was captured as a videocase for PSMTs to examine. Findings show that every PSMT included a discussion of the middle school students’ interaction with the technology in their noticing prompts, demonstrating that PSMTs recognized that the middle school students’ mathematical understanding was tied to their interactions with the technology. Additionally, results from PSMTs’ justifications for their predictions of middle school students’ responses to the task, …

Professional noticing of children's mathematical thinking as conceptualized by Jacobs et al. (J Res Math Educ 41(2):169-202, 2010) includes attention to and interpretation of children's mathematical thinking, and deciding how to respond instructionally. In order to interpret a child's mathematical thinking, a teacher draws on her or his mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) (Ball et al. in J Teach Educ 59(5):389-407, 2008). This research study focuses on the relationship between elementary preservice interns' development of MKT and their engagement with professionally noticing their students' mathematical thinking through analysis of their students' work samples. An integrated professional noticing and MKT framework …

Developing Attitudes Toward Learning Arabic As A Foreign Language Among American University And College Students, Martin Isleem
Faculty Contributions to Books
This study investigates the developing attitudes of American university and college students toward learning Arabic as a Foreign Language. The primary goal of this examination is to shed light on the ways in which students' attitudes toward learning Arabic affect their motivation to learn the language, as well as their commitment to learning it. A secondary goal of this study is to reveal students' perceptions of the use of both Spoken and Standard Arabic in the classroom, and what effect their perceptions may have on their developing attitudes toward Arabic, and their motivation to learn the language and study its …
