Online teaching and learning continue to grow in the post-pandemic educational world. The purpose of this thesis was to identify effective teaching strategies and student attributes that promote positive learner outcomes in the online environment. Based on the literature review of 30 research studies, evidence supports the following effective teaching strategies: (1) get students to engage with content, (2) give feedback, (3) get students working together, and (4) build students’ self-efficacy. Teacher implementation of these methods increases student engagement and improves learner outcomes. In an effort to find new ways of motivating and engaging students this literature review aims to understand the main concepts of Project-Based Learning (PBL), what motivation is, and how it affects student academics. PBL is a teaching method that uses inquiry, collaboration, real-world scenarios, and community involvement through the use of projects. PBL is a student-driven method in which teachers help facilitate discussion while students create and drive the projects. Student book choice in the high school English classroom is often limited by curricular constraints, the pressure of statewide and national tests, and the personal reading preferences of the teacher or department, with a bias towards an established canon of white, male authors. A technology initiative was adopted in a Minnesota suburban school district integrating 1:1 iPad devices into the elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the impact 1:1 iPad devices had on student engagement within the high school classrooms. The research questions focused on how educators are using the 1:1 iPad adoption to impact student engagement, the most and least effective iPad engagement strategies found within the 1:1 adoption, and the perceptions of students and teachers regarding the engagement strategies employed when using iPads in a 1:1 adoption.
