Based on the theoretical framework of experiential learning, this thesis focused on whether project-based learning (PBL) is an effective instructional method for middle and high school education. This review of the literature examined the difference between project-based learning and problem-based learning as well as the difference between project-based learning and a more traditional style of learning. It also investigated the various elements needed to have a successful PBL environment, the challenges/barriers to implement PBL, the instructional methods and support used, collaboration within PBL, and the significance of PBL. This paper explores the theories that govern three processes of learning: project-based, problem-based and self-regulated. One of the critical questions that this paper addresses is: how can these three processes be utilized to plan an effective unit? Studies have shown that students benefit motivationally from various inquiry-based models of instruction. These models mirror authentic tasks performed in the real world and engage the students in an in-depth way that compels them to use higher order thinking skills.
