A Critical Conceptual Dialogue On E. G. White's Admonition: "Not Mere Reflectors", Jay Brand, Randy J. Siebold
A Critical Conceptual Dialogue On E. G. White's Admonition: "Not Mere Reflectors", Jay Brand, Randy J. Siebold
Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference
White's challenge, that 'Youth should be … thinkers, and not mere reflectors of other men's thoughts' can be misinterpreted. Often, individuals criticize education’s focus on scholarly sources instead of personal creativity. However, to avoid reflecting other men’s thoughts, students must be aware of what those men – and women – have said. In fact, in my understanding, it is impossible to contribute original, fresh ideas and insights WITHOUT awareness of what others have already said. To think originally, one must be familiar with previous ideas; otherwise, s/he will be in danger of merely reflecting the ideas of others - even …

Bilingual Latinas Experiences Graduating With 4-Year Degrees, Patricia S. Costa
Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference
This session presents the results of a qualitative research study about the achievement gap between bilingual Latinas and other ethnicities. Statistics show that merely about 18% of Latinos in the United States have a bachelor’s degree. Researchers claim the main hurdles for bilingual Latinas to graduate from universities are being undocumented citizens, lacking English proficiency, having economic hardship, having familial accountability, and experiences with discriminatory practices. The primary purpose of the research project is to describe the university experiences of six self-identified bilingual Latinas who earned 4-year degrees in universities in Michigan. The participants’ stories shine light into what seemingly …
Fun Reading Practice?: Strategies And Evidence From A One-On-One Reading Intervention, Caddabra Brown
Fun Reading Practice?: Strategies And Evidence From A One-On-One Reading Intervention, Caddabra Brown
Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference
Based on the Response To Intervention (RTI) model, about 5% - 10% of students do not respond to generalized or small group instruction. These students need direct instruction delivered with an individualized format during which they receive an increased number of opportunities to practice with immediate corrective feedback. However, these practice sessions can be met with resistance. This is moreso the reality among at-risk readers and boys. In this presentation, creative, engaging, multisensory approaches useful for practicing reading skills will be discussed and demonstrated. These approaches are useful for teachers, school psychologists, interventionists, and parents.

Combating The Minimum Mindset: Changing Schools From The Inside, Juliette Dayen
Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference
Facilitating change in learning organizations must be approached from a multitude of perspectives. Students are often ignored and uninvolved in improvement efforts. As key participants in schooling practices, students should be involved in change processes. Students can take an active role in developing skills and knowledge to help them thrive in learning environments. This presentation focuses on how students can be supported to develop a growth mindset through a model that could work in multiple learning contexts.

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference
Are you a K-12 Adventist school principal or would like to be one? If you find yourself constantly thinking of and creating ways to sustain a positive learning environment at your school you are not alone. Many studies suggest that the struggle to maintain a positive culture in schools is directly tied to principals’ leadership characteristics (Beaudion and Taylor, 2004; Peterson and Deal, 2002). This breakout session will present four key principal characteristics that help maintain a positive culture in Adventist K-12 schools. Opportunity will be given for principals to share other strategies that work in their environment. Beginning principals, …

They are the foundation for instructional alignment whereby the learning objectives, assessment tools, and instructional methods mutually support the desired learning outcome. This poster describes the essential components of a learning objective and provides practical tips on writing well-defined learning objectives.
