The Role Of Community College Faculty In Teaching And Learning For Sustainable Development, Anouchka Rachelson
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes, beliefs, and practices of community college professors regarding education for sustainable development (ESD). In-depth interviews with 14 professors from different disciplines were conducted. The participants taught at Miami Dade College, Florida, a Talloires Declaration signatory since 2006, and all had attended Green Studies professional development workshops. Written documents such as assignments and samples of student work were used for triangulation. The annual report of the college’s Earth Ethics Institute and its Web site served as additional sources. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for common themes. The Talloires Declaration’s …

A common raven suddenly begins to call from Cornwall Park. I rush to the front porch trying to see what the commotion is all about. Two adult ravens are flapping high over the green canopy, croaking vigorously. Like vigilant Block Watch captains protecting the integrity of a neighborhood, ravens exhibit exceptional observational prowess coupled with intense fidelity to family and place. I scan the forest with binoculars and notice three raven fledglings perched in a scraggly birch tree at the edge of the forest. Scanning higher, I finally detect a distant bald eagle circling over the urban park where the …

The Teaching Of Food Technology In Secondary Schools, Angela Turner, Kurt W. Seemann
The Teaching Of Food Technology In Secondary Schools, Angela Turner, Kurt W. Seemann
Dr Angela Turner
This paper presents a summary of findings from a recent Australian study that investigated perceptions of ‘food technology’ as viewed by teachers in secondary schools compared to a wider professional view. Maintaining and fostering a coherent and accurate perception throughout the food technology career, from school leaver to professional undergraduate studies, is critical for both the evolution of the field of knowledge and the need to keep up with increasing world demand for food technologists and food innovation. While ‘food technology’ has been well established in most secondary school curriculum offerings, a contradiction has emerged between the ‘school view’ of …
Green Schools: Constructing And Renovating School Facilities With The Concept Of Sustainability, Jonathan W. Oetinger
Green Schools: Constructing And Renovating School Facilities With The Concept Of Sustainability, Jonathan W. Oetinger
Dissertations
The focus of this study was to examine the benefits of constructing and renovating school facilities with the concept of sustainability. The overarching questions were: What impact does the environment have on constructing and operating school facilities? What relationship exists between the learning environment and constructing and operating school facilities? The purpose of this study was to determine the value and benefits of implementing energy efficient and sustainable design features in constructing new and renovating existing school facilities. When viewed through the lens of global warming, or the increase of greenhouse gases through the increase in the temperature of the …

Clarifying Sustainable Food Technology Futures Through Technacy Genre Theory, Angela Turner, Kurt W. Seemann
Dr Angela Turner
In order for education systems to nurture a culture of innovation and sustainability in the school staff room, this research asserts that far greater clarity and classification methods need to be employed to define exactly what the subject matter and learner attributes in schools are meant to address compared to the wider world demands upon it.
A Sustainable Model For Opencourseware Development, Justin Johansen, David Wiley
A Sustainable Model For Opencourseware Development, Justin Johansen, David Wiley
Faculty Publications
The purposes of this study were to (a) determine the cost of converting BYU Independent Study’s e-learning courses into OpenCourseWare, (b) assess the impact of opening those courses on paid enrollment in the credit-bearing versions of the courses, and (c) use these data to judge whether or not an OpenCourseWare program could be financially self-sustaining over the long-term without grant monies or other subsidies. The findings strongly suggest that the BYU Independent Study model of publishing OpenCourseWare is financially self-sustaining, allowing the institution to provide a significant public good while generating new revenue and meeting its ongoing financial obligations.

Education And Girls' Development In Malawi: Promotion Of Girls' Education In Relation To Sustainable Development, Helen Momoko Wilson
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Girls' education plays a key role in the development of a nation. There are various barriers to girls' education that prevent them from being given an equal opportunity as their male counterparts. As a result they are not enabled with the skills or knowledge that they require to further themselves, their families, their communities and their nation. Several approaches have been made to strive to improve the situation of girls' education in Malawi. This study takes an in depth look at the factors that make girls' education so critical to development and how the various approaches taken have or have …
The Impact Of Individual Decision Making On Campus Sustainability Initiatives, Aurali Ella Dade
The Impact Of Individual Decision Making On Campus Sustainability Initiatives, Aurali Ella Dade
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) have increasingly committed to become more sustainable in recent years. Despite this commitment, academic publications in the sustainability field assert that progress has been slower at IHEs than expected and that most IHEs have found sustainability initiatives difficult to implement. Comprehensive sustainability initiatives require cooperation from a broad set of constituents with diverse and sometimes conflicting goals. Creating a sustainable IHE also requires changes in both physical infrastructure and individual behavior. Any number of institutional factors can advance or limit progress towards these objectives.
Previous investigations have assessed individual case studies, compared IHEs in a …
Rethinking Reiche, Tracie J. Reed
Rethinking Reiche, Tracie J. Reed
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
Part I of the study examines the differences between two environmental assessment methods for the K‐12 education sector: the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED Schools Version 3.0 and the British Research Establishment’s (BRE) BREEAM Education issue 2.0. Credit requirements are compared side‐by‐side and against recommendations from researchers in areas such as acoustics, lighting and indoor environment quality. Strengths in the two schemes and areas for improvement are highlighted, with acknowledgement that each scheme offers components and techniques from which the other could benefit. Part II of the study introduces the Howard C. Reiche Community School in Portland, Maine. …

Sustainability Through Profitability: The Triple Bottom Line, Connie I. Reimers-Hild
Kimmel Education and Research Center: Presentations and White Papers
Today’s highly competitive, globalized world requires organizations and businesses to think differently about how they are going to stay in business. Businesses can no longer afford to focus on profits as their sole purpose for existence. Organizations must instead think about the “Triple Bottom Line” and its implications for their ability to grow their brand, customer loyalty and profits.
Sustainable Teacher Development Programmes For Effective Teaching In Public And Private Secondary Schools In Abia State, Nigeria, Madumere-Obike
Sustainable Teacher Development Programmes For Effective Teaching In Public And Private Secondary Schools In Abia State, Nigeria, Madumere-Obike
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Effective implementation of any programme, especially that of improving the performance of the teacher, no doubt depends largely on continuous development and update of relevant educational materials. While many nations around the world have embraced, the need for education to achieve sustainability, only limited progress has been made at the level of secondary education, especially in Abia State. This limited progress emanate from many sources. In some cases, lack of vision or awareness has impeded progress, in others; it is lack of policy or funding. It then requires the government at all levels addressing issues that are specific to the …
