Academic Cheating And Stressors At The University Level, Samuel Borge
Academic Cheating And Stressors At The University Level, Samuel Borge
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine why academic cheating occurs. Prior studies have investigated students’ reasons for their academic cheating, and this study aimed to further this research by trying to determine variables that might influence the behavior. A total of 56 Assumption University undergraduate students participated. Self-report measures included the Survey on Academic Dishonesty (SAD) (McCabe & Trevino, 1997), the Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen et al., 1983), and a measure of self-control (Tangney et al., 2004). In addition, a novel probability discounting task was created as a second measure of academic cheating. This task assessed participants’ likelihood …
Effect Of The Depletion Of Self-Control Strength On The Self-Regulation Of The Nutritional Process In Obese Individuals, Malgorzata Obara-Golebiowska, Hanna Brycz
Effect Of The Depletion Of Self-Control Strength On The Self-Regulation Of The Nutritional Process In Obese Individuals, Malgorzata Obara-Golebiowska, Hanna Brycz
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Self-strength can be depleted as a result of previous acts of self-control. The depletion of these resources is reflected by decreased effectiveness of controlling other behaviors. The aim of the research was to evaluate the impact of the depletion of self-control resources on the motivational and behavioral aspects of eating self-regulation among obese people. A total of 100 obese people participated in the research. In the experimental group a depletion of self-control resources technique was applied. The impact of the above method on motivational and behavioral aspects of eating self-regulation was verified through participants’ answers to two items on the …

Mechanisms Of Influence On Youth Substance Use For A Social-Emotional And Character Development Program: A Theory-Based Approach, Stefanie Holloway, Brian R. Flay, Carl Siebert
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: The Theory of Triadic Influence (TTI) provides a comprehensive framework for understanding adolescent substance use. Objectives: We examined mechanisms by which a TTI-guided social-emotional and character development program, Positive Action (PA), influences adolescent substance use. Study data come from the PA-Chicago, longitudinal matched-pairs cluster-randomized control trial. A diverse, dynamic cohort of approximately 1,200 students from 14 low-performing schools were assessed at eight points of time, between grades 3-8, across a six-year period. Students completed scales related to substance use, self-control, deviant peer affiliation, and school attachment, adapted from the Risk Behavior Survey, Social-Emotional and Character Development …

International Journal of School Social Work
School social workers provide social, emotional, and behavioral interventions for elementary-age students within multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) when disruptive behavior and deficits in self-control are observed. Secondary/Tier 2 cognitive- and behaviorally-oriented interventions that target self-control have been shown to impact positive outcomes in academic, social, emotional, and behavioral realms for elementary-age students. This study sought to evaluate the Zones of Regulation® intervention for elementary-age students identified with disruptive behavior via a small randomized controlled trial (N = 63). Students were identified for disruptive behavior concerns through a universal behavior screening process and were randomly assigned to the intervention group …
Alcohol Use And Drinking-Related Eating Restriction Behaviors Among College Students, Peter Preonas
Alcohol Use And Drinking-Related Eating Restriction Behaviors Among College Students, Peter Preonas
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The combination of eating restrictions and alcohol use is a prevalent problem on college campuses. Some students engage in eating restrictions prior to drinking to limit their overall caloric intake or to enhance intoxication effects. To date, limited research suggests that drinking-related eating restriction behaviors are associated with additional and unique health risks relative to high-risk drinking or eating restrictions alone. As such, additional research examining this unique, risky set of behaviors is warranted. Consequently, the present study aimed to address gaps in the literature by further examining the risks associated with drinking-related eating restrictions and testing trait factors related …
Self-Control Training For Parents Of Children With Autism And Related Disabilities In Albania, Amanda Jane Petersen
Self-Control Training For Parents Of Children With Autism And Related Disabilities In Albania, Amanda Jane Petersen
Theses and Dissertations
Self-control can be defined as the ability to select a larger, later reward over a smaller, sooner reward. This ability, also known as gratification delay, has been highly correlated with academic competence and success. Studies that examine gratification delay have identified strategies that have been observed to increase the delay time to reward. This study examined the extent to which parents of children with Autism or a related disability could be trained to teach these strategies. Participants were seven mothers who were all ethnic Albanian. The results indicated that these mothers were able to teach the three strategies they were …
Organizational Information Security: Strategies To Minimize Workplace Cyberloafing For Increased Productivity, Hawazin Al Abbasi
Organizational Information Security: Strategies To Minimize Workplace Cyberloafing For Increased Productivity, Hawazin Al Abbasi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Productivity loss occurs in organizations that experience high levels of personal Internet use by employees on company time, which includes employees using smartphones to surf without needing the firm's Internet connection. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore reliable ways for organizational leaders to monitor or limit their employees' use of smartphone technology for personal use (cyberloafing) while on the job to minimize wasted work time. Social cognitive theory, which includes an emphasis on human behavioral changes based upon the environment, people, and behavior, served as the conceptual framework. The general research question was as follows: How …
Self-Control Effect During A Reduction Of Feedback Availability, Aaron Dean Von Lindern
Self-Control Effect During A Reduction Of Feedback Availability, Aaron Dean Von Lindern
Doctoral Dissertations
A growing body of recent research has pointed to the potential value of allowing learners to have some autonomy in shaping their learning environment. Studies of this so-called self-control effect have demonstrated that allowing learners to control some aspect of the instructional setting facilitates motor learning compared to conditions that are controlled externally. The purpose of the present study is to examine how learners ostensibly provided self-control over feedback behave when the actual availability of feedback is constrained by a predetermined schedule of coach availability to provide feedback. Furthermore, an investigation into potential underlying mechanisms will be examined through a …

Investigating The Effects Of A Sentence Writing Strategy And A Self-Monitoring Procedure On The Writing Performance Of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, David Rago
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Writing is a tool students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can use to communicate and interact with other people socially and professionally. Strong writing skills may lead to social and economic success, as well as a sense of self-empowerment. Unfortunately, there is very little research related to the use of sentence-writing strategies and self-monitoring procedures to improve the writing performance of adolescent students with ASD. Thus, this study was designed to examine the effects of a sentence-writing strategy and a self-monitoring procedure on the writing performance of adolescents with ASD.
The study included five participants. These participants attended the same …
A Comparison Of Bias In Four Measures Of Monitoring Accuracy, Fred Kuch
A Comparison Of Bias In Four Measures Of Monitoring Accuracy, Fred Kuch
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Typically in calibration research, subjects perform a task and make a judgment about the success of the task. Accurate findings help subjects improve self-calibration. In addition, researchers rely on the accuracy of findings to make inferences about underlying metacognitive processes. Consequently, it is important that the measures used to assess monitoring accuracy are as free of bias as possible. Bias indicates whether an observed value of monitoring accuracy over- or underestimates the true value.
This study examined gamma and three other viable statistics, d', C, and the G Index, currently used to measure monitoring accuracy. Using Monte Carlo simulation techniques, …
Same-Race Regulatory Resource Depletion;Obstacles Of Black High-Achievers, Shondale Deloach
Same-Race Regulatory Resource Depletion;Obstacles Of Black High-Achievers, Shondale Deloach
ETD Archive
Researchers have long been interested in the academic underachievement and disengagement of many African American students. Fordham and Ogbu (1986) offered the acting White phenomenon as one way to understand the problem. Fordham (1996) found that, in order to avoid being accused of acting White, some Black high achievers limit their academic abilities, particularly around Black low achieving students. Black high achievers can also encounter psychological costs as a result of limiting their academic prowess. There is some evidence, according to regulatory resource depletion theory, that altering one's normal thoughts, actions, or feelings in order to serve present circumstances, as …

Self-Monitoring And Self-Reinforcement Applied To Junior College Study Behavior, Thomas A. Cesa
Self-Monitoring And Self-Reinforcement Applied To Junior College Study Behavior, Thomas A. Cesa
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Although previous research has shown the efficacy of self-control techniques such as self-monitoring and self-reinforcement in changing study behavior, the adequacy of the experimental procedures utilized in many studies may be questioned. This experiment re-examined the effects these operant conditioning procedures had on the study behavior of junior college evening students by using three groups of subjects exposed to different combinations of self-control techniques.
Control Group subjects recorded their new thoughts (ideas relating the course material to their everyday lives) in an attempt to control for the effects of novel procedures, motivation and other non-specific variables. Self-Monitoring Group subjects complied …
