Previous research explains that twenty-first century education has moved passed pedagogical ideologies that focus solely on student tasks that require the recall of facts or rote application of simple procedures. Unfortunately, the literature on music education has ignored the importance of measuring intrinsic attributes of music learning and fundamental musicianship. Measuring ‘valid’ higher-order and critical thinking skills as they relate to music learning is significant because states are now measuring student learning and teacher effectiveness by evaluating multiple data driven indicators. The purpose of this field project is to develop and implement a workshop called Four Chords to Freedom, which combines music performance with decolonizing, postcolonial feminist human rights education to serve as a space for transformative praxis in formal and non-formal educational settings. This field project includes observations from the activity, as well as recommendations for educators who are interested in combining human rights education with music performance to explore pedagogical approaches that develop skills and orientations centered on a critical understanding of human rights.

Piano pedagogy is the study of the teaching of piano performance. Several effective methods have been developed since the early 1700's, but lack empirically supported techniques. Immediate feedback procedures have been shown to be effective with skill acquisition in various capacities within the literature. While some innovative techniques are being developed which utilize technologies such as video and sensor-based feedback, the true impact of these interventions has not been empirically validated. There is also a paucity of research in the behavioral literature evaluating the efficacy of immediate feedback procedures in acquisition of music performance. As music educators we can model proactive advocacy among community members to prevent individuals' reactive violence in response to intolerance for differences. We can offer music-learning tables as safe spaces in which community members openly and collaboratively learn to know each other as individuals with diverse identities and interests. As messmates around the table, we can identify ways that researching, questioning, and being musical together can eradicate fears and the damaging effects of homophobia.

With the adoption of the common core state standards, pressure to raise the achievement of young learners was intense. The role of music in Grenada, West Indies has traditionally been to pass on knowledges, values, and ideals; and to provide a means of connecting to one another through expressing commonality of experience, ancestry, and nationhood. This paper explores how Eric Matthew Gairy, during his era of political leadership in Grenada (1951-1979), exploited the transmission and performance of music in very specific ways to further his career politically and exert power over Grenadian society. This paper explores materials from four published and recommended books, experienced flute educators, and reputable music collections to create a basic guideline for the private flute lesson teacher. The topics and materials presented will be the outline for guiding a beginning flute player to success as they increase in ability through secondary education. This includes instructions on playing position, tone production, and techniques for helping develop a proficient player.
