Learn how facilitators use Keller’s ARCS Model of motivation (attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction) to design workshops that are effective at engaging student learning in a co-curricular environment. This report follows the structure outlined by the Learning Commons Assessment Task Force charge to make recommendations to the Provost’s Learning Commons Committee for major renovations and restructuring of space and services provided in the UMass Amherst Learning Commons. These recommendations include results from assessment undertaken by the task force and collaborators, literature review, and site visits to comparable institutions with learning and/or information commons models. Also included are floor plans and overviews of floor layout for the reinvention of the Learning Commons on the Lower Level of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library.

More than 80% of US college students report feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, almost half of whom describe their academic experience as traumatic or very difficult to handle. Stress, sleep difficulties and anxiety are just some of the symptoms that manifest in college students. Undergraduates seem particularly susceptible to these stressors, but only one in five seeks medical consultation for their issues. (American College Health Association [ACHA], 2013)

The Next Engine 3D Scanner would enhance and promote the use of the Makerbot Replicator 3D Printer that has recently been purchased for use by students and faculty who wish to explore this innovative technology and incorporate it into the curriculum. The scanner increases the 3D printer’s usefulness by allowing existing objects to be scanned and printed, rather than just designed from scratch. This poster describes an outreach exhibit program utilizing a media wall digital signage system in the 24/7 study space at The Center for Science and Social Science Information, Yale University. The mission of the exhibit program is to showcase,using media wall technology, the work of Yale faculty, research, academic units, and outreach programs. The Center is a newly renovated collaborative library, a merge of the Kline Science Library, the Social Science Library, and the StatLab campus computing facility that opened in January 2012.

This presentation describes how the library and the Graduate School at the University of Kentucky collaborated to streamline the thesis and dissertation submission process. The outcome was that the Graduate School implemented an electronic thesis and dissertation mandate in Fall 2013 and students now submit their theses or dissertations directly to the institutional repository, which enables immediate free online access to their research.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between the perceived organizational climate and professional burnout in libraries and computing services units in West Virginia higher education. Research questions were defined to investigate the differences between libraries and computing services units in the perceived organizational climate, professional burnout, organizational climate vs. burnout, demographics vs. organizational climate, demographics vs. burnout, and the combined effects of demographics and organizational climate upon burnout. The Work Environment Scale (WES) Form R, third edition, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) HSS, third edition, and a demographic questionnaire measured the organizational climate, burnout, and demographics. …

Before the rising popularity of the Internet in the mid 1990s, Scott Memorial Library, like most others, used printed newsletters to inform users about new resources and services. The JEFFLINE Forum, our attempt to resuscitate the Library's newsletter by employing the technical advantages-and increasing presence-of the Web, debuted in October of 1999. The fifth anniversary of the Forum seemed like a good time to look back at its evolution and to examine some of the challenges inherent in developing and sustaining a library newsletter.

Predating the major higher education mergers, the Cape Technikon Library Service was faced with the incorporation of the Mowbray College of Education and Boland College of Education libraries in 2000. The actual stock of these two libraries was larger than that of the Technikon, and in addition, an institution that had a monolithic library structure was suddenly faced with coping with a more dispersed structure. Introduction. This study explored graduate students' information behaviour related to their process of inquiry and scholarly activities. Method. In depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with one hundred graduate students representing all disciplines and departments from Carnegie Mellon University. Analysis. Working in pairs, we coded transcripts of interviews into meaningful categories using ATLAS.ti software. The combined use of quantitative and qualitative analysis aimed to reduce subjectivity. Results. Graduate students often begin with a meeting with professors who provide direction, recommend and provide resources. Other students help to shape graduate students' research activities, and university library personnel provide guidance in finding resources. …
