Addressing barriers to high school graduation is essential to decreasing dropout rates. Schools provide various supports for students on their pathway to graduation with varying effects on preventing dropout. Research studies indicate that students’ perceptions of the school and staff influence educational attainment. This post-positivist, correlational research study examined three research questions including students’ perceptions of the school and staff, students’ perceptions of graduation supports, and whether specific supports correlate to more positive student perceptions of the school and staff. Dropping out of high school is an issue that has faced the educational system for years. At a high school in Mississippi, the dropout prevention plan implemented was not beneficial to all at-risk students because it mainly focused on academic issues. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand why students dropped out of high school and to gather strategies for a dropout prevention plan. The conceptual framework was based on 5 factors: general deviancy, deviant affiliation, family socialization, structural strain, and academic quandary. The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy
Abstract This paper clarifies the cumulative impact of the current national education policy on African-American children, which ultimately aims to limit local control of urban schools. The authors argue that urban schools in the United States are increasingly required to rely upon temporary teachers who are trained to implement a curriculum focused on standardized testing. The No Child Left Behind Act and the current Duncan administration’s approach to closing (and re-opening) schools combines to further exclude low-income community involvement in local schools. Variations In Dropout Rates Across Virginia, Joshua K. Bowser

Using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis, this study attempts to capture variation in dropout rates across Virginia counties and cities. With the respective dropout rates as the dependent variable, seven independent variables are used accordingly in order to provide as much explanatory power as possible. At the 10 percent significance level, four of seven variables are statistically significant with an adjusted R2 of .374. Important policy implications can be derived from the model and its statistically significant variables.
