Public Safety Presence And Response In Campus Housing: Using Restorative Justice Interventions To Mitigate Harm And Restore Trust In The Residential Community, Sydney Pidgeon
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
In the wake of social unrest and demands of police reform (Childress et al., 2020; Davidson, 2020; Rogers & Gravelle, 2020), institutions of higher education have a unique opportunity to model a system of campus safety that mitigates harm and restores trust. This research explores the complex relationship between campus safety officers and residential life staff and student leaders at a mid-sized private institution and implements restorative justice interventions to rebuild trust between the two populations. This research created an intervention framework that improved the ongoing partnership between the Office of Residential Life and Department of Public Safety and facilitated …

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
There is research available on campus safety perspectives and issues, but these studies are primarily from the student perspective. Of the few studies that show campus safety perspectives from the faculty and staff viewpoint, fewer of these studies reflect these perspectives as they occur on community college campuses. The purpose of the study was to examine the perspectives of faculty and staff members on campus safety. For the study, twenty faculty and staff members were interviewed about their perceptions of campus safety.
The results of the study were that although the participants generally felt safe on their campuses, they were …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The topic of this dissertation is college and university safety. This national quantitative study utilized resource dependency theory to examine relationships between the incidence of reported campus crimes and the structure, function, and resources of campus security offices. This study uncovered a difference in reported total crime rates, violent crime rates, and non-violent crime rates for colleges with police officers, internal security, contract security, hybrid departments, and no security office. This study examined the combination of institutional characteristics which best explain the occurrence of total campus crime, violent crime, and non-violent crime on campus. Two forms of data collection were …
Campus Safety Directors: A Leadership Frame Analysis, Ross A. Wolf
Campus Safety Directors: A Leadership Frame Analysis, Ross A. Wolf
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study is based on leadership frame theory as developed by Drs. Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal who merged several different schools of theory into four different frames: structural, human resource, political, and symbolic. In July, 1998 the Leadership Orientation (Self) survey, developed by Bolman and Deal (1990a) was distributed to 343 campus safety directors at American public four-year postsecondary institutions. A return of 190 (55.4%) useable survey instruments was obtained in this study.
The utilization of leadership frames by campus safety directors was examined as well as the relationship between frame usage and age, education level, length of time …
