Black History In The Early Childhood And Elementary Classrooms: Teacher Beliefs And Practices, Shannon Mccormack

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Educators across the United States have struggled with meaningfully yet appropriately addressing race within History and Social Studies lessons at the Early Childhood and Elementary level. Previous research has revealed the importance of these conversations and the benefits that learning accurate history has for students of all racial backgrounds. The literature has also revealed the discomfort and apprehensiveness that educators may feel while confronting and teaching about our nation’s complex and often grim history. The purpose of this research was to analyze teachers’ beliefs and comfortability regarding addressing race in the classroom and how that translates to their teaching practices. …

The Social Responsibilities Of Public Education, Catherine M. Cane Jan 2022

The Social Responsibilities Of Public Education, Catherine M. Cane

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Teaching is a profession. Education is a social responsibility. The idea that teachers should be solely responsible for educating an entire population places a heavy burden on those who have chosen to dedicate their lives to a single profession. To create a more stable, successful, and socially conscious society it is imperative that every individual sees themselves as an educator; for, a socially neglected education system leads to weak socio-cultural ties, which results in social upheaval and heavily fractured social systems. This is not to say that we are all teachers, but rather to argue that because our education system …

Deverne Calloway: “I Am A Teacher---I Will Teach”, Holly Hick

Dissertations

In 1962, DeVerne Calloway was the first Black woman elected to the Missouri General Assembly and the first Black woman elected to any public office in the state of Missouri. A political activist and educator by nature, a legislator by trade, DeVerne has decades of historically documented critical work within the intersections of race, gender, and class. Her work, though well documented, remains undertheorized. This study seeks to explore DeVerne’s life and work through Black feminist theory and Critical Race Theory’s tenets of intersectionality and interest convergence, ultimately tracing her actions as a public intellectual. Written as an educational biography, …

The Teaching Of Negro History In The Elementary School, David Joseph Jackson Jul 1932

The Teaching Of Negro History In The Elementary School, David Joseph Jackson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

One of the reasons why there is such a great lack of cooperation within the race is ignorance of race ability. Students in high-school and college often times have but a vague and obscure concept of the Negro race, educationally, industrially, economically, and when in time these students seek to make and adjustment they find themselves handicapped . For this reason in order that, that love of race, that race consciousness, that makes not only for loyal race brothers, but rather which makes for true loyal law abiding citizens of America, Negro History, should find a place in the curriculum …
