Reimagining The Flute Masterclass: Case Studies Exploring Artistry, Authority, And Embodiment, Sarah Carrier Sep 2019

Reimagining The Flute Masterclass: Case Studies Exploring Artistry, Authority, And Embodiment, Sarah Carrier

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This work explores the flute masterclass as an aesthetic, ritualized, and historically reimagined cultural practice. Based on fieldwork that took place between 2017 and 2019 in the United States, in Italy, and on the social media platforms Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, I argue that the masterclass—an extension of the master/apprentice system that dominates learning in the classical music tradition—is characterized by embodied qualities of artistry and authority. These qualities are not inherent, but are perceived through subjective, social, familied, and affective bodies.

Chapter One outlines the main themes and the research design. Chapter Two is a case study that analyzes …

Designing A Social Architecture For Personal Leadership In The 21st Century: The Autonomous Realization Tetrad (Art), Bobby Ricketts May 2018

Designing A Social Architecture For Personal Leadership In The 21st Century: The Autonomous Realization Tetrad (Art), Bobby Ricketts

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Rather than summarizing the extent of my learning as a graduate student in the University of Massachusetts Boston Critical and Creative Thinking Master of Arts Program, this work instead illustrates a starting point for how I intend to apply my learning moving forward. Various characteristics in the writing do, however, reflect influences from all CCT courses taken. Primarily using personal narrative, I discuss various personal and professional experiences which have inspired self-developed creative methodologies. The methodologies, and learning derived from using them, are folded into an inquiry regarding Futures Studies, Systems Thinking, Design Thinking, Mastery, and Flow. Inspired by these …

Navigating Uncertainty In Automotive Technology Instruction: The Subjective Experiences Of Automotive Instructors During Laboratory Activities, John Martin Porter Ii Jan 2018

Navigating Uncertainty In Automotive Technology Instruction: The Subjective Experiences Of Automotive Instructors During Laboratory Activities, John Martin Porter Ii

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Educational researchers have conducted very few studies on the subjective experiences of both trained and self-taught auto mechanics (Barber, 2003, 2004; Nelsen, 1997, 2010). Further, no present studies explore the subjective experience of the automotive instructor as he or she experiences uncertainty in the automotive lab. This study addresses a gap in the current literature on career/technical instructor development. For this study, data were gathered by video recording automotive laboratory activities at three Midwestern automotive programs. Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) interviews were conducted with automotive instructors as they observed themselves navigating the lab environment. Data from the IPR interviews were …

Spectacular Spaces Of Consumption, Ellen G. Watkins Oct 2017

Spectacular Spaces Of Consumption, Ellen G. Watkins

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

Abstract:

Many pre-professional dance studios have become consumer driven in response to the growing economic practice of neoliberalism. Neoliberal values have become more prominent in today’s economy and inevitably seeped into the lives of dancers and instructors, creating consumer based pre-professional training schools. This paper argues that the current neoliberal state of the United States is negatively affecting dance education by reducing specialized and therapeutic training and as a result numbing the creative mind and the artist’s entrepreneurial abilities. This research begins with the basic definition of neoliberalism and discusses how the theory of homo politicus and homo economicus individuals …

Expression In Technical Exercises For The Cello: An Artistic Approach To Teaching And Learning The Caprices Of Piatti And Etudes Of Popper, Leah Hagel

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The Caprices of Piatti and Etudes of Popper are considered by most cellists to be fundamental components of the cello literature designed to provide a solid technical basis for the student. This document will provide an alternative approach to teaching and learning these works by focusing on the qualities of expression that can be developed during the process of integrating these studies into one's repertoire. After providing contextual information for the both composers and the works, I will examine how this concept of "artistry through technique" has been adopted by other art forms, used in training students on different instruments, …
