This dissertation follows a three-article format presentation. The topic addresses improving student success in a large enrollment introductory accounting course. The first article is a literature review of pre-class activities within a flipped classroom setting in higher education. The review of 34 articles identified as relevant to the literature review explored what the literature tells us about pre-class learning activities and synthesized what instructors can do to design pre-class activities that encourage students' preparation for class. The COVID-19 pandemic posed numerous challenges for instructors and students. Professors, for example, struggled to quickly and effectively migrate face-to-face courses to remote teaching modalities. What had not been anticipated, however, were the additional challenges to be managed when returning to face-to-face and in-person teaching. This reflective essay provides some insight into how faculty at the University of Puerto Rico attempted to modify teaching practices to re-engage disengaged students as they returned to the campus classroom. Also, recommendations about how to move forward by applying a pedagogy of renewal are made.

Designing Flipped Learning Activities For Beginner Programming Course, Benjamin Gan, Eng Lieh Ouh

This study focuses on designing flipped classroom learning activities across pre-class problem-based exercises; with in-class active discussions and practical problem-solving sessions; and follow up with postclass problem-based labs and assessments. We evaluate the effectiveness of our learning activities based on student surveys, course feedback, grades, and teacher feedback for a beginner programming course with non-IS students. We describe detail programming learning activities with comparisons to existing practices based on related work. Our findings are that majority of students (86%) agreed with flipped classroom, but teachers should be aware of the 14% who disagreed and cater for them. Teachers should avoid …

Finding time to teach, assess, and reteach all required standards in an Algebra 1 course made it challenging for me to incorporate student-driven activities designed to engage students in learning mathematics. This portfolio examines the extent to which HRHA 440: Human Rights, Conflict, and Community changing equipped students with the agency and confidence they need to be human rights changemakers. The purpose of this portfolio was to structure a re-design of the course towards a more collaborative, flipped classroom approach, and then to assess the extent to which this course re-design promoted achievement of the course learning outcomes.
