Positionality: The Interplay Of Space, Context And Identity, Rebecca Y. Bayeck
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
This article considers the way in which positionality shifts and is formed during a cross-cultural study to reveal the complexity of the insider-outsider status. As a researcher in a male-dominated game setting, I reflect on the research process and my interactions with participants to show the interplay of space, context, and identity in shaping a researcher’s status. I discuss the process of gaining access to the research site and participants, and data collection in relation to space, context, and identity. The interaction of my identities with space, and context informed my status at various moments. This interplay constructs a complex …
Lessons To Learn From Teacher Activists Organizing For Systemic Change Through A Community-Based Coalition, Cynthia Roy
Lessons To Learn From Teacher Activists Organizing For Systemic Change Through A Community-Based Coalition, Cynthia Roy
Educational Studies Dissertations
Corporate education reformers say they want excellent education for all students, yet scholars have documented the failure of corporate, neoliberal education reform. Educational organizing offers a powerful alternative to education reform. The purpose of this study was to understand how teachers in a community-based coalition made up of workers, educators, students, parents, guardians, grandparents, elected officials, and community leaders organized for equitable, systemic school change. This critical, feminist, activist ethnographic study included six participants and involved field observations, formal and informal interviews, and artifacts collected over six months. The instruments used to collect data were a demographic survey, a field …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This thesis, “Writing for Research in Brazilian Schools: The Landless Workers Movement’s Education of the Countryside,” examines pedagogical practices of rural areas in Brazil. More specifically, I analyze writing practices of high school students in public schools co-governed by the state and the Landless Workers’ Movement (MST), a grassroots social movement that has fought for agrarian reform in Brazil for over 40 years. I analyze research papers developed in the social movement's research program: autobiographies written by students in their first year of high school and research papers written in the two final years. My analysis looks for connections between …

Decoloniality As Methodological Praxis, Eric J. Hunting
Adult Education Research Conference
This paper examines decoloniality and ethnographic research using Maria Lugones' theoretical conceptualization of motion and stasis. In doing so, this supports developing a decolonial praxis-oriented toward culturally responsive research.
Expanding The Educational Enclave: A New Teacher Starting With Inclusion, Catherine Wilder
Expanding The Educational Enclave: A New Teacher Starting With Inclusion, Catherine Wilder
CGU Theses & Dissertations
An enclave is a group of individuals who are somehow extraordinary and divided from the whole. By this logic, a special education classroom segregated from the general population is an educational enclave. Modern research has been moving toward inclusive practices making these enclaves less isolated. This ethnographic account is of a first year education specialist entering critical skills teaching without prior experience or knowledge of the moderate to severe field. Being introduced to this particular field in the midst of a pandemic this new teacher attempted several inclusion practices previously untouched at the particular school and district. Over the course …
