Identity And Advocacy: The Missing Components In Promoting Social-Emotional Health And Self-Regulation For Multiply Marginalized Girls, Jovonne Tabb, Temple S. Lovelace, Mary Comis, Olajumoke Oshokoya
Graduate Student Research Symposium
Girlhood has been a topic of great interest in the last decade. As individuals have examined the lack of girls in STEM or the increase of bullying in girls, there has been a push to understanding the differential experiences along gender-based lines. In this study, the researchers highlight the results of the successful implementation of a group-based curriculum that utilized identity and advocacy as critical components in a treatment package focused on self-regulation. Using a pretest-posttest design, the researchers found a statistically significant difference in several key areas that are of key importance when supporting the needs of adolescent girls. …

In 2017, Drs. Guardino, Cannon and Mr. Logan Silverman presented the different types of technology that may assist professionals when working with students with disabilities. Last year, in November 2018, Dr. Guardino gave a keynote presentation at the Florida Educators of the Deaf and hard of hearing annual conference addressing the various strategies professionals use when serving students who are deaf with disabilities (i.e., autism, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder). This presentation highlights the systematic integration of teacher inquiry within the undergraduate special education program at the University of North Florida. Inquiry is embedded across courses each semester and put into practice in a variety of ways in our PDS network. In all, inquiry serves as a tool for capturing student learning as candidates collaborate with mentor teachers to intervene and meet the needs of diverse learners. This research project focused on how positive feedback affects student’s academic achievement. To begin, I researched different types of positive feedback, how to use it, and the outcomes of other studies focusing on the impact of using positive feedback. My study was done over the course of three months and four students who were struggling in math were selected to participate in a small group. While working with the students on math content standards I also intentionally embedded positive feedback into my lessons in several different ways. Labels are for clothing, not people! The presentation Eliminating Colorism encourages positive interactions with black males in a school setting. Colorism is defined as discrimination within one group or race, and can negatively impact academics, behavior, and a child’s, development, particularly among black males. Schools incorporating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as a best practice can help bridge the gap with our Black male population.

Using data derived from a real-time focus group experience, this session will address strategies for improving retention and recruitment of minority faculty members and students at institutions of higher education. This focus group was comprised of alumni minority students from a rural university. The questions for this group were composed by faculty members trying to ascertain the perceptions of the minority students. The data collected provided answers to the proposed questions, but revealed information validating the experiences of other minority stakeholder groups and the impact to programs. This poster session highlights the ROCKETS program implemented in Sumter County Schools through UGA Extension. Through the ROCKETS Project in-school sessions, youth with disabilities are provided additional opportunities to belong to a larger group of youth through the Georgia 4-H Program. The ROCKETS Project focuses on Agricultural literacy and STEM education as content areas to cultivate, recruit and graduate the next generation of a highly-skilled diverse workforce.

Teachers of Color in the state of Tennessee comprise only 13% of overall teachers in the workforce*. As Tennessee's student body becomes increasingly diverse, recruiting and retaining teachers of color, as well as providing cultural relevant content, is paramount. This session will provide an interactive presentation that will allow community voices to shape education priorities among Black and Brown students in Knox County Schools.
