Affect is prevalent in learning and it influences students’ learning achievement. This paper details the design and evaluation of an Affective Tutoring System (ATS) that tutors student in computer programming. Although most ATSs are purpose built for a specific domain, making adaptation to another domain difficult, this ATS is architected for adaptability and extensibility. This study also addresses a lack of research exploring the theories and methods of integrating affect and learning within the learning process by proposing methods of regulating the negative affect of students. Both quantitative and qualitative techniques were used for evaluation of the effectiveness of the …

The Gaise College Report: The American Statistical Association Meets Sound Pedagogy In Central Virginia, Beverly Wood

Beverly Wood

Research in undergraduate statistics education often centers on the introductory course required for a large percentage of college students. While acknowledging the diverse setting, audience, and purpose of introductory courses, existing research assumes that courses offered by different disciplines share the same goals and teaching practices. The purpose of this study is to examine the objectives for student outcomes and pedagogical delivery of introductory statistics courses in various academic departments to provide explicit evidence for this assumption. The American Statistical Association’s Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) are meant to apply to all introductory courses. The College …

Beverly Wood

In 2005 the American Statistical Association (ASA) endorsed the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report. This report has had a profound impact on the teaching of introductory statistics in two- and four-year institutions, and the six recommendations put forward in the report have stood the test of time. Much has happened within the statistics education community and beyond in the intervening 10 years, making it critical to re-evaluate and update this important report. For readers who are unfamiliar with the original GAISE College Report or who are new to the statistics education community, the full …

Teacher Perceptions Of Technology In The Elementary Classroom, Allison Schnell

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

This qualitative, collective case study examines teacher perceptions surrounding the use of technology within three elementary classrooms. With a focus on student behavior, learning and motivation, Ryan & Deci’s Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is used as a theoretical framework for this research, providing insight into motivation and behavior. Findings suggest that while technology offers an incentive for some students, concerns regarding the overdependence on technology were apparent among all participants. This research sheds light on teacher perceptions surrounding technology and how it impacts children in and out of the classroom.

To Frame Or Not To Frame: Improving Goal Setting, Alexander Dontre

Scholars Showcase 2018: Innovations in Leadership and Learning

Goal setting is a fundamental mechanism used to enhance performance and to promote individual and organizational achievement. Accordingly, developing ways to improve goal effectiveness can be a valuable endeavor. This project proposes that the way in which goals are framed should be positively correlated with success rates. New Year's resolutions were determined to be framed either positively or negatively, and then compared to the self-reported success rates. The study results confirmed that goals with positive framing resulted in higher success rates than did goals with negative framing.

Who Owns The Questions?, Roberta Niche

Scholars Showcase 2018: Innovations in Leadership and Learning

When instructors are the only ones asking questions, students miss out on important opportunities to deepen their learning and reflect on their understanding. Instructors and instructional designers must create an environment where learners create, organize, refine, and answer their own questions. They must help learners develop a robust “questioning toolkit” (McKenzie, 1997) and allow them to take greater ownership of their learning, deepen comprehension, and make new connections and discoveries on their own (Rothstein & Santana, 2011)

Scholars Showcase 2018: Innovations in Leadership and Learning

Deadly school violence continues to dominate our headlines year after year. This modern horror profoundly scars our hearts and launches national political debates, state/federal legislation, and billions of dollars in technology and facility upgrades. Yet deadly attacks seem to grow more frequent despite wide-scale safety efforts. Our solutions are not working so we need to revisit our assumptions. It is time to break our habit of throwing money at ineffective solutions and return to fact-based risk assessment and mitigation.
