Students are increasingly finding library resources online due to the explosion in online courses and the use of course management software for all courses, whether fully online, hybrid, or traditional face-to-face courses. Librarians from Union County College (a two-year community college) and Montclair State University (a large research library) discussed the various approaches used to promote and market library services and resources using their institutions’ library management system (LMS). A representative from Gale Cengage presented how Gale is connecting library content to the classroom while helping libraries raise their profile on campus.

A recent sign of the technological transformation of scholarship is the consolidation of views about the emergence of the “digital scholar,” a variation on the influential reform minded account of faculty work associated with Ernest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered (1990). An essential feature of this new form of academic practice and identity is named “social scholarship,” or participation in scholarly communications via the growing variety of digital networks for professional interaction. Though advocates are calling for publishers to develop born-accessible e-books to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) standards and the EPUB 3.0 measures now backed by the Society for Disability Studies, the realistic timespan for this achievement to become standard practice is far from ideal. To equitably serve users with disabilities, stronger technology and a mindset toward accessibility must become the standard in electronic collections. Previous studies have examined diversity in children’s literature: Gender diversity, racial diversity, religious diversity, and diversity in family composition. This project examines an often overlooked diversity issue in children’s literature: Housing diversity. In the stories they read and the accompanying images, children need to see a variety of housing environments and need to see the settings and the people portrayed in a positive manner.

Librarians rely on an ever-increasing variety of platforms to deliver streaming video content to our patrons. These two presentations will examine different aspects of video streaming platforms to gain guidance from the comparison of platforms. The first will examine the accessibility compliance of the various video streaming platforms for users with disabilities by examining accessibility features of the platforms. The second will be a comparison of subject usage of two of the larger video streaming platform providers (Alexander Street Press and Kanopy) done at Indiana University Bloomington, a large public university.

While collections dashboards are often used as an external communications tool, they have additional applications for improving internal processes and assisting subject selectors. The value of collection visualization for analytics and strategy cannot be underestimated as visualizations can help clarify complex information to improve decision-making. This paper summarizes the current efforts to deploy collection dashboards at the University of Houston libraries. Using Tableau to parse and visualize collections data, the library is embedding visualization frameworks into the acquisitions calendar to enhance selection and deselection processes.

Keeping Up Accessibility Practices And How It Relates To Purchasing And Collection Development In Academic Libraries: A Case Study At The College Of Staten Island Library, Kerry A. Falloon

At the College of Staten Island (CSI) Library-CUNY, the library has access to over 160 different electronic resources. A concerted effort started in 2016 to start collecting relevant voluntary product accessibility template (VPAT) statements from new and current vendors and integrate these new practices into acquisition and electronic resources (ER) workflows. The paper will discuss the responsibilities of purchasing agents in libraries, acquisition or ER librarians, in regard to understanding disability law and how these legal mandates apply when investigating, acquiring, and maintaining electronic resources.
